Coronavirus (2021) thread

This was 'retweeted' by Eran Segal who has been the go to on Israel data since the turn of the year. It doesn't sound good, praying it's maybe not quite so bad as it reads?

Very short thread if you click the link. Waning immunity from vaccines already?

We'll see how this pans out, but not great news.

My arch nemesis anti Vax mate has been warning me of news coming out of Israel for a fortnight now. He is connected to pharma, and hates the way the vaccine has been rolled out and still isn't convinced about it. I won't hear the end of this once he gets hold of it.

Most countries in the world won't let us, or anyone, in just yet.

Canada officially open their borders in early September but it remains to be seen just how open they will be.

America have just pushed the UK up a level on their risk chart thing, so don't expect them to allow us to travel there for leisure anytime soon, possibly not for the rest of the year.
But that’s purely because we’ve had delta longer, it’ll all change soon enough.

Thanks for the reply, if this is the case, why are we not allowed in ?

Because there is a travel ban between the UK and US as per the Presidential proclamation. So when that is (eventually) lifted and we can travel to the US, you would reasonably expect the vaccination rules that apply to those that ARE allowed in to be applicable. So, if the US does allow us in then Astrazeneca is WHO approved and so recognised by the CDC for entry to the country without quarantine.

For example, if you travelled to the US today from a country that was allowed and you had 2 x Astrazeneca, no quarantine is required. Plenty of Brits are going to Mexico for two weeks in the sun before onward to the US to get around the travel ban. See the end of this screengrab.

I'm heading across to Liverpool to visit loads of pubs so be interesting to see what the Scouse are doing with their "freedom".
As promised, I braved the Scouse today. Went in eight Merseyside pubs (largely independent micro pubs), only saw bar staff wearing masks in two of them. Hardly any customers wearing masks, and in Formby a couple had a go when I went in wearing mine as a courtesy to staff "You don't need to do that mate, haven't you heard ?". Very different to Sheffield, where mask wearing seems much more the norm on trams and trains.

It felt like the last 18 months never happened, though you might have expected the chain pubs to be a bit busier in the sunshine. I fear a lot of folk are staying away from pubs and won't be rushing back anytime soon (they were all good, by the way, particularly in Waterloo).

I'm not so sure it will change anytime soon tbh.

Delta is still causing havoc here (from a case perspective, which is the only thing along with vaccination rates that really matters when discussing international travel), and showing no real signs of slowing down.
Delta is also on course to run riot in America, though they are behind us in that respect, so might not get the brunt of it for another month or 2.

Fast forward to autumn and we could be in a position where we have things relatively under control here, enough for America to lift the travel ban at their end. However, by then it could be rampant Stateside and the UK might not permit non-essential travel across the pond.

As always, a lot of ifs buts and maybes but I'm less confident that we'll get seamless travel with America before the end of the year, whereas 2 months ago I would've been quite confident of that.

Really hope I'm wrong, desperate to get to Vegas again!

Here's a positive thought. And as I say I'm really clueless when it comes to any of this so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I won't be in the slightest bit offended.

But waning immunity, what does that really mean? Waning antibodies? Well, didn't we already learn that? In the long run, I've heard it's the memory T and B cells which plays the major role. So the term waning immunity to me really isn't clear. Waning antibodies are one thing (and yes, boosters still seem the way to go), but immunity in terms of the most serious consequences I'd like to think are still protected against by the T and B cells.

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong or haven't understood the original twitter thread correctly.

We won as we are the only ones with no restrictions. Look at Holland, tried beating us to it but had only 40% or so vaccinated, backfired massively. All looking good over here thanks to early decisions made on vaccines. Imagine the mess with delta if we had started as slow as our European friends? Definitely still have some restrictions.
Is this a joke? Nobody has won. It's not a competition its a fucking worldwide pandemic.
