In the NRL in Australia, St George sacked Paul Vaughan (a player) for hosting a party during restrictions. Not just a warning or fine, they sacked him!Quite intrigued by the NFL approach to the coming season. Players aren’t being forced to be vaccinated, though they will face strict testing protocols, but all Tier 1 staff are expected to be vaccinated, unless they can demonstrate religious or medical reasons for not doing so. Vikings and Patriots have already parted ways with certain coaching staff.
They have made clubs stay in zones during periods of lockdown: so when New South Wales has been in lockdown, teams from that state have remained in South Queensland in hotels so they can play games. But a player took a prozzie back to his hotel one night and the Queensland minister is saying she’s going to revoke this allowance because she’s sick of them breaking the rules and games could end up being cancelled. The last straw for her has been her seeing families of players passing food to each other across balconies.
New Zealand Warriors from Auckland have based themselves in Australia throughout COVID, with both the Aus and NZ govts now allowing them to travel back to NZ (or Aussie teams over there) for home games.
They have also stopped Australia and New Zealand from competing in this year’s Rugby League World Cup (although some cynical Brits think it’s because the NRL don’t want isolation periods post-tournament to affect the start of their NRL season).
They are currently playing in front of empty stadiums n’all.
Makes a mockery of our Champions League and European Championships.
