I've had a fever of over 39c since last night... Is that concerning?

Mate you will kill yourself with worry the way you are going on. You have covid so a high temp, cough, bad head etc are all par for the course. Take paracetamol and so long as you are breathing ok then just rest up. If you get overly worried and concerned call the doctors mate.

Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Are you trying to ‘cancel’ the country’s Chief Medical Officer because you don’t like the message?

The Govt is the one that takes the decision, not Whitty, but in a pandemic I would like to hear from the UK’s CMO. I did assume in a democracy that I should be allowed to hear what the CMO thinks.
Chris Whitty has talked a lot of sense throughout the pandemic. In the summer, when one of the journalists asked him if he thought we were done with the pandemic, he said that we would likely have a tough winter. We've done pretty well up to last week, but he may be proved right over the next month and people don't like that.

I'm not worrying actually. I just ask questions! I'm like that as a person ha.

whether I like the message or not isnt relevant . It’s the effect of words .

him and jenny Harris effectively caused a massive cancellation in bookings and hospitality at a time when there is no financial support measures in place.

I understand how his only concern is controlling Covid but he should make a recommendation to the govt who decide in s round with other factors and then if they do decide we need to close hospitality they can offer financial support to the sector

we are left with a situation where restaurants are faced to deal with mass cancelations because of emperor Whittys
words yet the government are saying they can stay open, so no financial support.

Hve just copied and pasted some interesting musings from the CEO of Biontech on the topic of vaccine efficacy at the bottom-

If his initial data on efficacy of the vaccine dropping to 25% after around 3 months on triple jabbed people proves correct, then the only way we break this cycle is getting the oral anti virals rolled out as soon as possible. From the beginning of the outbreak I have always said that it needs a pincer movement of vaccine and anti virals to target the key metric here which is hospitalisation figures.

These anti virals can be used as preventative courses at home once you are diagnosed with cv which will be specifically targeted for the higher risk groups. I think it will be a big game changer as these tablets will work in a similar fashion to HIV and Hep C tablets as it is a protease inhibitor which is proven to disable a virus (they had already started work back in 2003 on this with the initial sars outbreak and recent studies are showing very promising results in hospitalisation reductions. We have to move away from decisions being made just on infection rates as this will be a continuous problem with multiple variants and we will never break this cycle.

From a personal point of view it will be a bit of a shitter that these expensive drugs will have to also be used on anti-vaxxers to save their sorry arses, but that's a discussion for another day.

I can't see any other way to an end game solution other than the oral tablets with a tweaked periodic roll out of vaccines/boosters, however, logistics on distribution will be problematic and it has to be rolled out on a global basis as well so they need to stick to their word of licensing the pill at cost for poorer countries. It will not be as easy for covid to evade the disabling properties of a protease inhibitor which effectively stops the virus replicating, but give it enough time and a big enough reservoir of hosts it may find a way.

The CEO of BioNTech, the German company behind the Pfizer vaccine, has said early data on the shot’s efficacy against the Omicron variant looks “reassuring”, but warned that vaccines alone would not stop the pandemic.

Ugur Sahin tole Le Monde in an interview that preliminary data from Britain and South Africa suggested “an efficacy of around 70% after the third dose, and around 20% to 40% after the second dose”. He said he thought South Africa’s estimate of 70% efficacy against severe forms of the infection after just two doses appeared on the low side.

“The rate of primary infection is high in South Africa,” Sahin said, “so the control group, the one our vaccine is being compared to, is undoubtedly better protected than a conventional population. So I’m waiting for the next real-life UK data on the subject.”

Sahin said he was waiting for real-life data to assess the accuracy of a German study suggesting a rapid drop in efficacy to about 25% after three months, even after three doses. “There will be a loss of effectiveness against Omicron over time, it is very likely, but we still have to measure the speed,” he said.

“I will not base predictions on preliminary laboratory data but on real-life data. It’s obvious we are far from the 95% effectiveness that we had against the initial virus. But after the third injection our vaccine seems to provide 70% or 75% protection against any form of the disease, which is still a good result for a vaccine in general – and I think we will be well beyond that for severe forms.”

However, Sahin warned that the vaccine alone will not stop the pandemic. “Even triple-vaccinated people can transmit the disease, and they will have to be tested, especially around vulnerable people,” he said. “With the Omicron variant becoming dominant, protective measures will remain essential, especially this winter.”

He said BioNTech was on target to deliver an mRNA vaccine tailored to Omicron by March, subject to regulatory approval. He said the virus’s spike protein remained “an essential target” for vaccines. But the company was also evaluating “other targets, located elsewhere on the virus” and carrying out “initial research work on different types of vaccines”, he said.

Or you just gear up and fund the NHS to support society in a Covid era. Whatever ‘free at point of use’ model you care to adopt, it will still need paying for. We have been obsessed with efficiencies and cutting costs and then act surprised when it can’t cope in a crisis. You get what you pay for.
Disaster capitalism can only work for so long.

Congratulations to our public health overlords. The economic collapse you've been aiming for has finally started to crystallise.
