From the Graun blog

According to the Financial Times (paywall), which says it has been briefed by “several Whitehall officials”, cabinet ministers agreed this afternoon that “primary and secondary schools would probably close until the mid-February half-term break”.

This is welcome if true but genuine weapons grade incompetence.

Just before Christmas the govt was taking schools to court for closing.

Just yesterday(!) Johnson was saying how important it was for children to attend.

Today they close schools for 6 weeks.

Beggars belief.

Just read this from CNBC, someone shared it on Twitter, although it seems it was written this moaning too.

The good news I’ve seen, is someone from Oxford University, who helped on the current one, said even if the current vaccine doesn’t work, they can amend it which should only take a month-6 weeks, to cope with mutations.

Yep and it’s entirely normal for there to be amendments to the vaccine.

As I said earlier, I work for a company involved in the vaccine rollout and the potential is now there to get this both rolled out quickly and also the process in place for subsequent rollouts. My concern is the volume of unnecessary deaths until we get to that point though.

Allowing schools to open today, for example, if he shuts them down tonight or later in the week is just negligent and will have unnecessary consequences.

im all for one last lockdown. But i fall into the category of 3 million who dont receive a penny in assistance if im stopped working (in peoples houses) . Im sat here torn between knowing its needed and worrying sick about how im going to put food on the table. Its a horrible.
I am really sorry you find yourself in this position , nobody should have been left without support whilst recognising it might not have been possible in the system we have , essential jobs still need doing so i hope you can find a way to keep going

Again forgive my ignorance, but what happens in the period where a vaccine evasive mutation first arrives (NOT when first noticed as these are 2 different things) and the end of that 6 week period or so where a new vaccine is not only produced but effectively rolled out to the population? Is there a potential for a catastrophic spread of infections during that period or the potential for further lockdowns every time this sort of thing takes place? Again, apologies if this sounds stupid.
Vaccines won't eliminate Covid , it won't limit its spread or ease of transmisison.

it is designed to assist the affected fight the disease more effectively than current virals etc.

In short reduce the death rate from or with the virus.

Yup. That's the trajectory we're on. Run through the whole population before vaccinating.
I wonder what the worst case scenario is if this happens. We were told at the start by Imperial College to expect 500,000 deaths if we just went for herd immunity. Presumably with a case fatality rate of about 1 per cent that figure is not wildly out.

Proper lockdown i mean, sage wanted it in sept , the tier system was not a bad idea in theory but there is far too many loop holes , we needed to be to!d like we were in march , as it is we are behind again and there has been hundreds if not thousands of needless deaths and people stuck with long covid

Thing is the lockdown in march wasnta proper lockdown for the first few days most people only only essential work could carry on. But what boris said only if you cant work from home ! Which is a huge part of the population had to go back, builders, gardeners, almost any one who disbt work in an office and we have stopped ! Ok the hospitality industry etc closed but it is now in tier 4, but believe me in tier 4 the roads are packed.
I dont know what the answer is I am hoping he says all 60yrs and above self isolate I could do with a break ;)
