So at the moment. Are we on target to fully vaccinate 14 million (most vulnerable) by mid feb ?

We will be over the next week or two. If we don’t hit it, then it will be either down to the supply (which it shouldn’t be) or someone making some very stupid decisions.

Bureaucracy when done well helps. When done badly causes more trouble than it solves.

As an example a year or so after I moved back to the area to be a full time carer to my mum (in her late 80s) I did all the paperwork for the Winter Fuel Allowance - rather important as she was totally bed bound needed a hoist on the ceiling to be moved and the bed changed that I gladly paid for out of my savings.

The allowance never turned up. I pursued it and in about February they came back to me after multiple calls and said they had paid it to owner of the house. I said that was me as I bought it outright 2 years before. As they confirmed from council tax records etc. I gave the name of the previous owner and told them I had her address if they needed it.

Oh. Was all I got told. Seems there was a mistake. They told me nothing more but it is easy to guess.

No idea if they ever claimed it back as I assume they paid her twice at two different addresses. But all went well the past 3 years and it arrived like clockwork into my bank same date every year. Until this year.

When I called pre Christmas after it failed to arrive the second month running 4 weeks later alongside my pension I got lots of ums and ahs and off phone whispering again and knew what it meant. I said - have you paid it to the previous owner again? There was an embarrassed silence followed by - I cannot discuss details but I apologise for the problem - but you will get it on. Giving todays date.

So I checked my bank this morning and happily it was paid.

This afternoon the post arrived with a letter dated last week on it stating that my Winter Fuel Allowance would be paid in soon. And if I did not get it by a date in Mid December in this letter clearly dated about 3 weeks after that date when they had dated the letter then I should contact them right away.

If that is how the vaccine roll out is being administered we are in big trouble.

And this is why I will keep pushing my friend until she gets that jab.

Friend of mine is a teacher. Just posted on Facebook they he's had his first jab. Surprised it is being rolled out already to teachers. Anyone else heard anything about that?
Maybe it depends where they live. Tameside have started doing social care workers this week. My sister, drugs team at Trafford General, could book a slot online from today. Some areas seem to be going through the priority groups quicker than others.

Things aren't going great here, but let's all appreciate we aren't in Alabama.

He lives in Salford. Can't remember where he teaches but maybe it comes from where the school is. I imagine it's much easier to vaccinate teachers via their school than from the GP or whomever

? Unless I am missing something.

The number from the West Midlands is DOWN today v yesterday.

From 5659 to 4756.

East Midlands down from 2900 to 2757.

North West was the only region with a significant rise as I posted an hour or so ago.

Up from 5419 to 6453
I should have said just outside the West Midlands - and perhaps i should have phrased it as over the last 7 days, rolling averages up big time.
Bromsgrove +238
Worcester +355
Redditch +158

Very good post on modelling of impact on cases, hospitalizations and deaths from the vaccination programme.

Bottom line: Deaths down 80% by mid-March if on track.

Thanks bud. I was knackered after ten minutes.

Had a chest exam today, sort of good news.

Won't give me any more antibiotics, had two courses already.

Docs said my lungs at the bottom are now clear but defo still 'sticky' at the top where the alveoli are. They've no idea how long it will take to clear and stop coughing.

I thought alveoli was the stuff you dipped your bread in on holiday?

You have to be kind to yourself, so even if I have a better day, I don't take it for granted, just chill on my bed.

Currently reading The Book Thief.

Highly recommended to anyone during lockdown.
Glad to see you're slowly getting better Tolm. Down here in Australia we've managed to control the virus with tough measures, and consistent messaging, from day one. By the way, I really enjoyed The Book Thief. All the best mate.

Although tragic and avoidable, the number of deaths is an almost irrelevant figure at this stage. If it's 1 or 1 million, it certainly doesn't matter from a healthcare perspective. COVID kills less than 1% of patients but that doesn't mean a massive percentage aren't seriously inflicted by it.

A startling statistic out yesterday is 1/4 of everyone in hospital with COVID is under 55, that's the threat this thing poses. In the grand scheme of things it means the vaccines will not have any impact for 1/4 of COVID hospitalisations until likely late summer.

If we don't push down cases then hospitals will have to start to make decisions they shouldn't have to, for example do you treat the 30 year old with COVID who is struggling to breathe (but will survive) or do you treat the guy having a heart attack who might not make it? With lower cases, the 30 year old isn't hospitalised, the other guy is treated and maybe both survive?
They already are in ALL the West Midlands hospitals. No spare ventilators or CPAP machines. Even though they have 50% more than they had in April

Winter fuel allowance isn’t applied for.
You get it automatically once you are a pensioner getting the state pension.
You only have to apply if you don’t qualify for a state pension.
