Coronavirus (2021) thread

Trains are the big worry for me. Until last week it had all been window seat only, felt fine. But on Saturday the trains out from Sheffield were full with folk standing in aisles; I got off early and then drove to Manchester. Scary, even with most people wearing masks.

So we set off early to the Las Vegas of the North to beat the traffic. A midweek break that was bound to please and situated on the leafy side of the sea at Bispham. Safety was paramount in these current climes and as they now incorporate their (TM) Clean Protect Promise what's there not to like.

We arrived at crack of dawn, parking up and scuttled off for breakfast which was followed on by a nice cliff top walk toward Cleveley's. Anyway fast forward to late afternoon and burnt to a veritable crisp we wobbled home with much gusto and that's when things went horribly wrong. The hotel was full being a bank holiday weekend and another reason we purposely allowed for late a check in to avoid a crowd. Well imagine our consternation when we finally walked into our en suite hovel. As rough as fucking toast would be an understatement and not at like their website promised to attract back the nervous Post Lockdown Custom.

Because we were staying here we didn't bring sanitation and cleaning products so effectively were left high and dry. No more rooms were available and the cleaner said they had a shortage of back room staff and they had passed comment to the hotel not to operate at full capacity because of this, but the bean counters filled their rooms regardless.

We Nipped to reception checking out as it was non conducive to safety and now we're back home having discussions on Covid safety in the hospitality sector circa 2021 and is it possible to maintain enhanced hygiene at permissible levels when under a constant pressure to perform. As per the thread title there are lots of buzz words and catch-phrases to entice us back into the fray but do they all do or say what's on the tin. We still had a lovely day out but from now on will not partake of hospitality whether hotel, bar, restaurant without first taking extra precautions to sanitize our bubble. Or maybe we were just being picky : /

I'd sooner set fire to my toes than go back for some more. Not just yet anyway.
The marketing's good and the colour purple reassuringly warm.

I think back then they were called Whitbread?

Feel for you... You wait so long for a nice holiday and it's not fair to have that pleasure taken away from you.

Perhaps a last minute holiday on booking.com with ratings of only 9 or higher could be worth a look if you're still willing? Possibly they'll be nothing available but there's normally something decent you can find if you aren't overly fussy.

You should post the hotel as well so people can avoid them. Especially if they are a chain of hotels as that'll help everyone on here regardless of where they live in the UK.

Deepti Gurdasani was on BBC news earlier. She suggests that there shouldn't even be a question surrounding delaying opening from June 21st and regardless, even leaving things exactly as they are now, hospitals are about to become more full than they were in January. A really bleak picture.

Bloody hell, let’s hope she’s wrong and if she is she is sacked from her job and removed from social media. Pretty big statement to make and be so sure of.

she is Comparing a position when aggressive action was needed because nobody in the country was vaccinated.

it’s a different position now but she ignores this.

not arsed about 21 June being delayed but crikey there are some out there who are demanding lockdowns And aggressive action.

getting most of the adult population vaccinated in the uk is pretty aggressive action .

Not been funny or anything but I never expected June 21st at all and expect step 3 to go backwards. Having said that, if she’s genuinely insisting that we'll be back into months long lockdown and the hospitals will be worse than January after 39 million people have had 1 jab and 25 million have had 2 we may as well hold our hands up and admit this virus has got our number. Nothing but permanent restrictions seem to be good enough. Fucking sick of existing.
The bottom line.
Lifting all restrictions can be delayed a month till over 40s and the vulnerable are double vaccinated but that's about it.

Cases are rising

But hospitalisations are not rising much and deaths are barely rising at all, both due to the sensible vulnerable being double vaccinated.

This is excellent news. Current restrictions may need to be kept for a month or so to get us closer to full herd immunity (via vaccination), but once we have got there, all restrictions need to be lifted to let our now primed immune systems deal with the new strains that are not that much more dangerous to our herd. It then becomes like flu to our society and should be dealt with as such. [That said normal flu only has a natural R0 of 1.5 (ave) not 3.2 (ave) for infectious Variant of Concern (IVOC) Alpha (Kent) and who knows what for IVOC Delta (India).]

It is a shame we have never shut our our borders to control our risk but the demand to have a holiday in the sun is intense (see numerous newspaper articles about holidays and the chattering classes demanding their pandemic holidays) . On this point it should be noted that Genome testing has proven that the Autumn 2nd wave was brought on by holiday makers returning from Spain with a new strain not by the original strain.

Map of the variant.

You can do something similar for the SA variant - practically nonexistent.

You can also get the numbers/proportion of the new variant to Kent Variant if you want. Pretty useful. I guess we kind of knew this / could guess this. The data is for a fortnight to 22nd May 2021.

I'll flag up Manchester now as a potential problem area. It combines a cluster of variants with some of the lowest vaccine rates in the country.

BTW I agree with the French closing their border to us yesterday. They would be mad to let in a virus with a natural R0 of 3.7-5.2 (Current range estimates.) In with a vaccination programme 6 weeks behind ours.

Nice to see Heathrow now as a dedicated terminal for red list countries..

I have no issue with the June restrictions being delayed but I think there’s little to no chance of trying to impose lockdowns again and restrict people from seeing family when they’ve had both jabs.

I can live with not going out in big groups, going abroad etc but not being confined to a house and not seeing family properly for another year, imagine a lot will feel the same.

Thought it was 83%? Either way, it's very high. Seems mad to be pushing ahead with it when their vaccination rates are so low. Always about the money!
Unbelievably, the Japanese government doesn't have the power to cancel the Games as only the IOC can make that decision. When you sign up for an Olympics a country must effectively give the IOC government like powers on things like taxation and so on for the duration. The IOC is the de facto government on all things games related in the host country.

I'm amazed they can't just shut the borders and allow nobody in.
