Every year I have my flu jab. Every year it's a different vaccine because the flu changes. I've never moaned about it because its just what I have to do to keep myself safe. This is the same thing and it's here to stay. At least it's free and you don't have to pay for it lol
We are always learnng about how to improve vaccines. As a longterm carer I got free jabs eveey year from 20 years ago before I was even 50. I was told the pneumonia one would be just once not annual. That proved true but they soon found it was better boosted after a few years and I have had 3 now,

Science is always learning and changes tack accordingly.

Very true and we need to be accepting of this, or we should be prepared to increase our own risk of dying younger than we really need to, and increasing the same risk for others.

Some early but promising news from Israel in relation to Omicron.
https://www.jpost.com/health-and-we...icacy-against-omicron-expected-tuesday-687392
A doctor seems to have imported the omicron variant in to Israel from London according to the below paragraph from the article.

One of the doctors, in his 50s, brought the variant into Israel on return from a medical conference in London. He tested negative when he boarded the airplane from the United Kingdom to Israel and on arrival, but a few days later began experiencing symptoms.

Just a quick read of the last 10 pages tells you we're unlikely to be clear of Covid anytime soon. Selfish, horrible twats everywhere bleating on about their 'rights' and thinking by going against the grain it shows they aren't going to be told what to do by those in charge, like they are hero's of the free world or something.
Bellends.
Bellends have a purpose

Maybe I've missed this but the question really here though is does this show how many people are ill because of COVID and whether they are vaccinated or not? Context is so important here.

I think trusts are supposed to publish their best judgements on how many are in hospital truly because of COVID but I really doubt that's been done in the context of vaccinated or not too.

Basically, to my knowledge these figures as it stands would include a COVID positive vaccinated guy who came in with a broken leg which is obviously not useful.

Think about it.

If it wasn't because of covid, there would be no difference between the proportion of vaccinated people in the population and the proportion of vaccinated people admitted to hospital.

ie the proportion vaccinated being admitted would be ~90%. It's not.

Put it another way. Very approximately 2% of the population has tested positive in the last 28 days. So the proportion of emergency admissions for something else that are caught in these stats will be roughly 2%.

Bottom line: the stats aren't significantly skewed by the issues you raise. If they were, the ONS, PHE etc would be showing different stats - they care about getting these things right.

That’s quite high.
It is and I guess is one of the reasons the govt are talking about making vaccines compulsory for that age category and for certain professions. We're kind of in-between governments though at the moment and we don't really know what the incoming one intends to do.

The 'severe disease' part was always the point of the vaccines. Not to stop you catching it or even spreading it. Any advantage in that repect conveyed by them is a bonus. But protecting the health service from being overwhelmed by patients in icu for weeks on end was the aim and making the virus of minimal impact on most people not catastrophic impact on lots is the future even with them. Not eradication. We are way past that being possible. Vaccines do not usually exist to even hope to do that.
This is somewhat true. With Polio people get infected all the time. If you took samples you'd find it in their stool. Yet the vaccine for it is protecting against the severe disease which is paralysis. With the last sentence of eradicating a virus it depends which one. Smallpox is eradicated, but with coronaviruses and influenza since it's present in animals, it will never be eradicated.

However, the Covid vaccine is protecting against severe disease and death like you say. Gibraltar which has almost a 100% vaccination rate has a 7 day average of 37 cases. Yet a death rate of 0. Portugal which has a 86% vaccination rate has a 7 day average of about 2,900 cases, but a hospitalization rate of 523 and death rate of 13. Compare that to their peak back in Feb. it was over 12,000 cases, 6,600 hospitalizations and 290 deaths per 7 day average.

At least you’re getting one. The election here closed on St Patrick’s Day and it’s St Andrew’s Day today and they still haven’t agreed a coalition!

I guess that just reinforces the point that it's pretty easy to avoid wearing one if that's your wish. Exempt or not.
One of the reasons why our case rate was far to to high from March 2020 to April 2021.
Proper medical exemption certificates should have been required with a QR code that can be checked.

Thoughts as to why masks are back...
If Omnicron is 2.5 times more infectious than Delta (unadjusted R0 approx 5) thats an unajusted R0 of 11.
If Omicron is 2.5 times less virulent then that's the same number of cases, hospitalisations and deaths per day as we have now. If it's as virulent that's 2.5 times the number of cases, hospitalisations and deaths we get now which we could just about cope with.
All assuming vaccination still provides a high level of immunity if it doesn't we are not in a good place.
We will find out in a couple of weeks

Unvaccinated people set to be banned from meeting up with more than 'a few' others in Germany, new leader says

The incoming German chancellor's apparent intention for the country to join Austria in making vaccination compulsory by law.
But in a move guaranteed to further enrage certain sections of society in the nation, Olaf Scholz also intends to limit social contact for those who have not had their jabs.
