Certainly not over in America

The number of deaths from COVID in the US has gone up by about 40% in a week, the head of the national public health agency has said.

Rochelle Walensky, director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, added that hospitalisations were up by about 33% in the past week.
Don't forget that 40% of the US isn't vaccinated, that's over 40 million people. They also have bigger numbers of the worst COVID complicating conditions such as obesity, heart problems, diabetes etc.

COVID is perhaps the perfect storm over there and so it's obvious why more people have died in the US than anywhere else.

Isn’t 40% of their population about 133m people?

Again, vast majority are unvaccinated so it’s very difficult to care at this stage in the pandemic.

They are a couple of weeks behind the UK I think in Omicron taking off and we saw the same thing - with cases rapidly escalating and then flattening very quickly and falling in London and other parts of the south after just a few weeks. Now in the North West who were second in England to take hold seems to be at the start of going down. Midlands and Yorkshire are still rising so they might keep this going another week or two. But what happened in South Africa seems to be happening here regionally. And London and the south and the North West are a very large chunk of potential cases in England so even with the rise in the remaining regions we are likely to be on a downward track.

The US will almost certainly see the same general trend over the next month. But its state based set up might make it more staggered like in South Africa.

The NHS - a national health service - and the UK vaccination success may well be the reason why we seem to be doing even better than we might have done. And others with less success will do. BUt overall the same trend will be followed as Omicron is not Delta in its behavior. Thankfully.

So triple doses - which we have done so well on - seem to be saving the day.

They might be so good they will even save Boris if the decision takes long enough on his future.

The latest primary diagnosis supplement has been released by NHS England.

This shows that the number of people in English hospitals with Covid has increased from 13,045 on January 4th to 15,026 on January 11th. A rise of 1,981.

The number of people actually being primarily treated FOR Covid has increased from 8,200 to 8,379 on the equivalent dates. A rise of 179.

This means that 91% of the increase of Covid patients in English hospitals has been incidental.

Now only 55% of Covid positive patients are being primarily treated for it.

He knows far more about City than I do. And too young to be at Radio Manchester when I was working there freelance years ago. So long that the radio commentary on games was still in black and white. Stuart Hall was there then but I don't think he has been at any City games lately owing to lockdown.
That’s funny

Very interesting thank you.

The actual number released on Jan 11 for patients with Covid in England hospitals was 16,939 - falling to 16,881 yesterday. Do you know why the above number is nearly 2000 less? They are not the incidental cases - tested positive but not really in for Covid - given the second part of your post suggests this is a much higher number than 1800 or so.

So why are these patient numbers awry and if they are more accurate why are they not the ones Gov UK post as their numbers are still the ones that the NHS in England release every evening as above?

In current circumstances accurate data for who is in hospital with Covid matters a lot right now so if there are less than being claimed by Gov UK we ought to put that right on the data base that all the media follow.

No chance the majority of cases produce a negative test on Day 5. Seems like they want to be seen doing something whilst not actually doing anything.

Even if it wasn’t a majority of cases producing a negative test after five days a proportion of an extremely large number of cases doing so would make a big difference to staff shortages across the whole economy.

Sorry, not sure.
Likely just a timing difference. Perhaps it takes time to additionally determine and report the primary diagnosis so this is actually a couple of days behind?

@Bluewonder 's data is acute providers only, so a bit less than national total.

The 16,939 refers to patients in ALL beds and is made up of both NHS trusts and the independent sector. This will include MV beds, MH trusts, community trusts and any places regulated by the CQC.
The 13,693 is all patients in a G&A bed (excluding MV beds, which made up 686 on the 11th).

For info, there are 71,821 acute beds occupied by non-covid, with 5,309 acute beds unoccupied.
