Meppen-Walter involved in death crash

September 19, 2012

Police investigating a Manchester City starlet over a fatal smash have seized CCTV which shows the incident.

Kulwant Singh, 32, died alongside his sister Ravel-Kaur Singh, 37, after they were hit by a silver Mercedes driven by 18-year-old Courtney Meppen-Walter near the city centre.

Ravel’s sons Harveen, 17 and Ajmeet, 16, were also injured. Harveen Singh was taken to Hope Hospital with life-threatening injuries but is now said to have been taken off a ventilator and in a stable condition.

His brother escaped serious harm.

Police have seized the footage of the incident and will prepare a report for the Crown Prosecution Service who will decide if the Academy player should be charged.

Detectives have ruled out earlier suggestions that Meppen-Walter had been racing a friend, the M.E.N. has learned.

Relative Balinder Singh said the family were expecting the bodies of Kulwant and Ravel-Kaur, who were Sikhs, to be released this week so that they could be buried.

It is understood the service will take place in London where the rest of the family lives.

Kulwant had been taking his sister and her sons back home after a religious festival at the Sikh Temple when the accident happened on Cheetham Hill Road. Police arrested Mr Meppen-Walter and James Conroy, the 19-year-old driver of a grey Volkswagen Golf, at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The smash happened about 10.15pm on Bury New Road on September 1.

Both men were released on bail until November pending further enquiries.

Police appealed for witnesses to call them on 0161 856 4742.

Sounds to me like this case ,ay not be so clear cut after all, despite the leaks to the media from 'police sources' in the immediate aftermath. A lot of people who rushed to judgement may well be left with egg on their faces. A sad incident for all concerned

We'll see what the final outcome is but quite a few look like they're going to be left looking pretty foolish.

City have backed the lad impressively as have his teammtes from what I've seen.
