COVID-19 — Coronavirus

All this talk about repeated lockdowns doesn't seem feasible to me. The economy is slumping already and it's only been a matter of weeks. If it carries on for much longer then we are looking at an economic collapse on a scale never seen before.

Can we afford to wreck the economy for a generation in order to reduce the death toll?
With all/most countries in the same position I have a feeling that somehow the economies will work together maybe not by choice and it'll dampen the effect somewhat....at least I'd hope so.

The madness of people never fails to amaze me. There is a druggie lives round the corner from me. His girlfriend died from an overdose late last year and within a week he had moved another girlfriend in. At least once a week there is an ambulance called to his house to deal with him and her. Now my wife pointed out to me that the last few days he has walked past our house with full face mask and gloves on. Not worried about dying from an overdose but god forbid the virus gets him.

The other thing that pisses me off is that he walks past our house at least a dozen times a day to get hold of his stash.

Surprising news but positive news. Not that 400-odd deaths should ever be classed as that of course. I do wonder whether all the different authorities in the country don't always get their figures in on time for the announcement the next day, so I think it's a case of seeing what the trend is over the next couple of days at least. I'm not convinced we've hit the peak in terms of daily deaths as it took the likes of Spain and Italy longer following lockdown.
I think there’s been a slight difference here having seen what happened in both Italy and Spain.
We ourselves had started isolating before the Cup Final.
Loads of us on here we’re calling for a lockdown or closure of some sort at least two weeks before it came into effect.
Stopped going to the pub, stopped going out to eat, declined work away from home unless absolutely necessary.
After the Cup Final we sold our tickets for the remaining games and sent tickets back for some, as it happened they got cancelled anyway. Reduced our shopping trips and mixing with others.
If just 10% of the population have also done this it would begin to have an effect on cases sooner than we expect.

Come on people lets at least try to be positive when there is a big drop in deaths. If there was a huge rise people wouldn't be talking about being a blip, but a sign of how badly the government have handled it etc and how it will be 2k a day by next week. Last couple of days stats have been relatively good, the NHS is still coping and new cases has levelled off. We are making progress and if we keep going in the right direction may start to see some restrictions lifted by the end of the month.

Edit: Posted at the same time as the post re. Pep's Mum :(

Disagree.
If you shut the economy down restarting it doesn't magically bring it back to life.
You also can't remove restrictions without testing and we never had the capacity to do it in the first place and will only barely have the capability by the end of this month and only then if things go well.
If you want to reduce the hit on the economy you have to keep it going.
Sadly this country is full of knob heads and we have a PHE and NHS whose doctrine is not to reecomend covering the nose and mouth. Thus accelerating the spread rate dramatically and making a policy of social isolation untenable.

Regards your last paragraph, you do have a point!

Cases are not dropping much if at all though. deaths will drop once cases drop. take a look at this... the deaths we are seeing now are from 2 weeks ago on the cases chart.

Thanks Grunge for the helpful information. I wonder if our ICUs / clinical teams are getting better at saving people. It’s probably too early to say but all the clinicians interviewed on the morning news seem to refer to people for fighting for their lives for 2 weeks (with about half recovering). It might be too early to judge.
