Yeah this, plenty in my work don't wear masks in communal areas until told, ignore distancing and had one idiot come in with a sympton when clear the instruction is don't , phone in and get a test (they did, negative thankfully)

Apart from the example set by Cummings, and Johnson not sacking him. That started the rot on public compliance.
It shouldnt and people who have that view are daft and excuse seeking. What should be happening is humiliation and shaming of him by the public complying and heeding advice or instruction and then being able to claim the high ground while keeping themselves and others safe

Edit: no idea why that post quoted urban genie.

Probably because you'd clicked reply on it maybe by mistake. Just go back in and delete it with backspace key.

Fuck me...I nearly agree with you about something.

That said Cummings or no Cummings I think there were and are still plenty who will take little or no notice of restrictions anyway.

I very much doubt whether Cummings would have influenced the abhorrent behaviour of the likes of No lives matter and extinction rebellion either.

With out a doubt many of the normally more moderate every day kind of people I think are less inclined to take much notice of this government as a result of the Cummings fiasco. That in itself should not be a bad thing were people to use their common sense and work out for themselves how best to avoid contracting or passing on this disease. Sadly of course many have not the intelligence to do so and do not realise that by banging on about Cummings or Boris and justifying their actions on the shortcomings of the government does infact only put themselves and others in danger from this virus.

More evidence if we needed it on the VitD side of things. 82% of hospitalisations in Spain have a VitD deficiency.

More Men had the deficiency than Women.

Interesting interview with Kate Bingham from the Covid19 UK vaccine Taskforce on the BBC earlier.
Nice to hear someone knowledgable about vaccination and the work done on vaccines in general.
May have misheard but I *think* she'd taken the jab already. Whilst not promising a silver bullet there were a lot of positives in her discussion. There's an awful amount of work going on to fight this (looking at different methods to find the most effective vaccine).

Scotland are building a lab to create CV19 samples (as they have in China) so we can look at inoculating with inactivated CV19 samples.

Here's her article in the Lancet:

Bottom line is, if people UNIVERSALLY wear face masks, wash their hands meticulously and keep a sensible distance - as they do in Asian countries - then we would not be seeing the rise in cases and deaths that we are seeing. It is relatively easy to keep this under control and does not require draconian measures or total lockdowns. Unfortunately however there are far too many wankers ignoring the rules and therefore killing people.
Spot on.

I sympathize with people who are working from home but keep your chin up, at least you're not sharing an office with people who literally couldnt give a fuck and struggle to wash their hands after having a piss nevermind because of a "cold"

I live in the Netherlands, some of my colleagues don't wash their hands after number twos!!

I really don't understand why we haven't had a vitamin D drive from the health service. Mass blood tests for Vitamin D deficiency and setting up appropriate supplement use by the population.
Vitamin D deficiency can't be overcome immediately, so doesn't really help folks in hospital unless they get to week 2 and day 10 is the key point in Covid-19 hospital cases.

it's clear that many people on here believe in full lockdown, for at least a short while, so i'm interested to know what your thresholds are for going back to 'normal' way of life? (football crowds, normal pubs whatever else).

only a few hundred cases per day?
only a completely effective vaccine?
a vaccine and endemic disease which still kills some every day?

just interested

Elsewhere in Europe, how's Sweden doing? (Especially if herd immunity is a nonsense if immunity fades.)

In September, Dr. Anders Tegnell, the Public Health Agency epidemiologist in charge of the country’s COVID-19 response reiterated the party line that a growing death count did “not mean that the strategy itself has gone wrong.”

Compare Sweden with the other Scandi countries:
Deaths per 100,000 people (data are from Oct. 13)
Norway 5.9
Finland 6.24
Denmark 11.58
Sweden 58.36
2 deaths per day in Sweden last time I looked.

is working from home affecting anyone yet? I know I am lucky that I am able to and have a job, but I’ve done bugger all this week. My motivation is at an all time low

I’ve worked from home for about 7 years, barring the odd project punctuated in there where I was based on site for about 18 months.

It can get to you. I’ve gone through periods where I’ve not left the house for about 3 days and it starts to affect you. I’ve learnt to always get out for a walk or run each day, another thing I do is get the windows open twice a day and get some fresh air into the place.

But yeah, it’s a struggle at times tbh.

The government haven't been great, but for me anyway, it is the public who are deliberately flaunting the rules who are causing the most grief we are all having to suffer.

Until there are some real changes in attitudes from these fuckwits, no Government will beat this pandemic.

This last year has shown how many selfish twats exist amongst us.

We seem to have a hugely selfish and socially irresponsible society. As you say, CV19 has shone a big light on that as well.

It’s genuinely making me reconsider whether my family’s medium to long term future should be spent in this country. I am really considering my options and looking at the future in a different light.

Is it not the same in most places?

That’s just a bullshit excuse for people who really can’t be arsed following simple guidance.
Its usually children that say ‘I did it because he/she did it first’. My mother always replied ‘would you put your head in the oven if xxxx did so?’.

Adults doing the same are ducking their personal and community responsibility and, in your particular way of political point scoring, are supporting their idiocy.

bit reductionist in my opinion.

Firstly i think if you're mother had put her head in the oven (assuming it is on, in your example) then your mother would have been very badly burned. Cummings got fuck all reprisal, and even got off £50k of backdated council tax. You would not put your head in the oven because it is wrong and because, sadly, your dear mother would be on death's door.

Secondly, the Cummings incident is merely the latest (or was the latest?) in a long line of incidents whereby personal responsibility and repercussions are apparently not a thing for certain members of society, particularly those who have the correct friends. This, i think, drip filters into the public's conscious over time and eventually it manifests as "well if they dont have to, why do i?".

Lastly i do think the Cummings incident is overblown, insofar as an incident it its own right. People should be looking at their own actions more and cannot simply make excuses all the time. However it is symptomatic of an entitled class completely out of touch of daily reality and had more of a 'straw and camel's back' element to it.

Scotland data first up: Worse than ever sadly.

28 deaths

1202 cases at 6,8% positive (lowest positive % in some time)

451 Greater Glasgow, 292 Lanarkshire, 152 Lothian, 91 Ayrshire

1117 in hospital (up 17)

85 on ventilator beds (up 3)
