CRIKEY!

Just when you think Greater Manchester cannot shock you further - it does.

Amazingly high numbers today.

Nearly everyhere on a record high - 6 of the ten boroughs top 1000 cases.

Even Bolton and Oldham topped 1000 today.

Some gigantic Pop Scores - including a UK record in Wigan - up 456 in one day after scoring an extraordinary 1508 cases. Highest ever daily Pop .

Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside also had Pop Scores above 400 today.

Unbelievable record high in GM of 11,374 cases - that is nearly 2000 more than the highest previous score.

And above the score for the entire North West every day up to a week ago!

No question now North West and Greater Manchester have become the epicentre of Omicron.

That looks like a drop in cases from yesterday but Sky reporting today's cases as a record high?
It is a record FOR ENGLAND - as England are the only place reporting today as I noted above.

Have updated and clarified. Thank you for spotting I had posted the UK number.

Was 160,276 England yesterday. So up 2296.

ENGAND REGIONAL CASES

The Regional numbers today are a bit concerning. NW with its highest ever numbers and up the most is still behind London - JUST - despite it having flattened off in the capital pre Christmas but then having stayed at this high level ever since. No sign of a real fall there and North West is a week or two BEHIND London so looks set to have these huge numbers it is now getting for several weeks to come.

And most of the other regions are now escalating fast too but still have some climbing to do let alone flattening at Lomdon like levels.

Could be a very high scoring month to come as hospitalisations will follw upward too. Just hopefully not by too much that a weakened NHS cannot cope.

OLDHAM 1161 - UP 514 on day & UP 612 on week - Pop Score 488* (POP 22,941) HIghest ever daily Pop Score rise anywhere! Gigantic rises here were quite unexpected. Will be in the 23K club tomorrow.

THIS 677 IS THE HIGHEST 'LOW' SCORE IN GM EVER - LESS THAN 3 WEEKS AGO - PRE OMICRON - NOBODY IN GM SCORED ABOVE 582!

I think it is clear already with the unbelievable way Omicron has gone from a handful of cases to a tsunami in just a few weeks that mitigating measures just aren't going to cut it. It has obliterated Delta and it is all over the UK and Western Europe already. Everyone who can get it will do so extremely quickly and that is the end game for this varient.

How many hospitalisations and deaths resulting will be apparent very soon.
This is the point. It is so infectious, restrictions will barely stop it.

Just to remind it will be England cases only. The other nations are reporting nothing again today.

N Ireland and Wales will not post anything tomorrow either.

And though the others will be back to normal on Tuesday Scotland will have the raw numbers but no detail from tomorrow and no hospital numbers even on Tuesday as they have an extra bank holiday for New Year that fell at weekend this year so they get an extra day off to catch up.

So Wednesday will be the first time all data will be reported as pre the two week holidays. Though the majority of the numbers (as in two biggest contributers) will be back tomorrow for cases but hospital numbers will remain England only tomorrow. Until Tuesday when added in N Ireland and Wales and Wednesday in Scotland.

Not exactly a united approach!
