COVID Data Thread

Interesting - thanks all.

A doctor just said on TV that they do not count an infection if you have had a previous infection. You just get recorded once.

I think that is what they said (I was half listening and not sure how they would even know given the huge numbers) but that is crazy IF true given the difference between variants and the fact you can be infected by both and be just as transmissable to others. Perhaps she meant only one test is recorded not multiple ones before you test positive. Though that was not what she appeared to say.

But given the mess some of our data recording and reporting has been nothing would be a surprise.

As another doctor said earlier - case numbers are flawed - POSITIVITY - is the key measure right now.

So true, but as I often note in the numbers here England is the only nation who ignores it unlike the others who report it daily in their data (as advised by WHO) for exactly that reason. England expect you to work it out and presumably hope you never bother. Which the media duly oblige and never do.

Maybe worth adding that the restrictions, whether by policy, closure forced by infection or people limiting their contacts would be expected to have had an effect by now.

WALES DATA

6 deaths - was 2 last week

2375 cases - was 1819 last week

14.8% positivity - was 13.2% last week

348 patients - was 387 last week

33 ventilated (Friday) - was 36 last week

Looks like Omicron has arrived in the principality but as yet no increases in hospital - some will surely follow though - deaths are slowly inching up in the UK though. But only slowly given we are where we are in winter.

The two highest areas for what look like Omicron spread are London and Manchester - which have been throughout the pandemic and still are the two lowest vaccinated.

Yet another piece of evidence supporting the fact the vaccines work even against Omicron to some degree.

Here are the Manchester cases for the past 9 days:

293 - 250 - 582 - 739 - 711 - 816 - 1204 - 725 - 881

You can visibly see Omicron colonising the city. Though knowing which of these ARE Omicron and which Delta would be good to know.

For the first time ever - btw - there are THREE boroughs of the 10 in GM with Weekly Pop Scores into four figures. Even in the big wave last January none ever got there. Quite possible more will get there in next few days though we are from today now week to week comparing with already rising cases seven days ago so - hopefully - the rises should now slow as they have in London.

Here are the current numbers for the ten boroughs (lowest is best - though in nobody's book is 606 described as low! Indeed, that lowest number was HIGHER than every single borough in GM just 11days ago!

OLDHAM 606

WIGAN 618

BOLTON 628

ROCHDALE 665

TAMESIDE 708

STOCKPORT 959

BURY 971

SALFORD 1022

MANCHESTER 1029

TRAFFORD 1147

These are record numbers for pretty much every single borough.

Remember that pre Omicron 500 or above put a borough onto the governments red watch zone for imminent consideration of restrictions and over 1000 you were always probably already in full lockdown

Some 764 deaths in England and Wales that mentioned COVID-19 on the certificate were registered in the week ending 10 December, the Office for National Statistics has revealed - the lowest level since 15 October.

The number is also down 4% on the previous week.

Data also shows that 6.4% of all deaths registered in England and Wales in the same period were linked to COVID-19.

As a caveat to this data, hospitalisations and deaths lag several weeks behind cases - so we may not yet be seeing the effects of Omicron infections just yet

ENGLAND HOSPITAL DEATHS REPORTED TODAY

There are clear hints now of a small increase. But it is only a small one mostly over past few days too. Inevitable given the high cases but as yet slightly worse than last week but still less than 2 weeks ago.

TUESDAY RECALL IS USUALLY THE BIGGEST NUMBER OF THE WEEK WITH THE WEEKEND CATCH UP FROM LACK OF REGISTRATION OPTIONS

153 with 20 North West - Last week it was 140 with 27 NW & week before 169 with 23 NW

SCOTLAND DATA

9 deaths - was 6 last week

5242 cases - was 3117 last week - slightly less of a rise than yesterday

14.9% positivity - was 11.3% last week - but positivity much the same

515 patients - was 516 yesterday & 541 last week

37 ventilated - was 38 yesterday & 38 last week

CASES WELL UP AND POSITIVITY WELL UP

HOSPITAL NUMBERS ARE FLATTENING BUT STILL JUST GOING DOWN ON DAY AND WEEK TO WEEK

Big changes here in the weekly cases by age group over past 7 days in Northern Ireland.

From the near 15K cases the under 19s have fallen today by 200 as school testing and spreading will be less than pre the holidays. The 20 - 39 group is UP by 500. Easily the biggest group rise. Over 40s barely changed. And the over 60s in total down 4 too. Though over 80s up as Care Home outbreaks are starting to increase again in Northern Ireland sadly.

But still well under 1% of all cases in the most vulnerable age and well under 5% in the over 60s is a huge testement to the success of the boosters.

NORTHERN IRELAND DATA

3 deaths - was 4 last week

2096 cases - was 1581 last week

14,876 WEEKLY CASES - WAS 14,632 YESTERDAY & 11,772 LAST WEEK

268 patients - was 276 yesterday & 326 last week

26 Ventilated - was 23 yesterday & 27 last week

HOSPITAL NUMBERS STILL GOING DOWN DESPITE HIGH CASES - MOST LIKELY BECAUSE OF THE AGE SPLIT SHOWN IN THE POST ABOVE

The 7 day average tracking map on the tracking site is getting a new level of tracking as of today. They had to add a new one with Delta too.

"From 21 December 2021, an additional category will be added to the cases map to show 7-day rates of newly reported cases that are greater than 1,600 per 100,000 people."

London falls again to its lowest total since Omicron arrived. Just over 20,491.

North West and both Midlands regions up the most.

North West highest yet - up over 3000 week to week - biggest ever weekly rise here. On 8481

Every GM borough bar one up around 100 (some by even more including 200s and 300s) week to week.

But not to the highest ever number (only 2nd most at 3720) and so a lower split of North West than in recent days.

Bolton becomes the lowest Pop Score across the pandemic for the first time ever - overtaking Stockport. It has been a Stockport/Trafford battle for the whole pandemic up to now. All despite scoring 298 - up 140 on last week.

Only Oldham NOT scoring over 100 Pop Score points today (up 94). Trafford the most (up a whopping 187 points).

Manchester top scores on 859 cases (up 277 on last week)

Oldham low scores on 223 (up 74 on last week)

Stockport and Trafford both well into the 400s (436 & 444 respectively). Wigan also up the most week to week (bar Manchester) by 189 to 383
