Crime on the rise / is society f*cked?

We have a low crime rate in this country. Only 98th in the world out of 195 countries, and 148th in the world for our murder rate.

Without the internet and 24hr news programmes a few decades ago it might have seemed like times were safer and society was better, but crime has been higher in the past than than it is now.

From 1990 to 2020:

Crime has also fallen since before the Coronavirus pandemic. Compared to April 2019-March 2020, there has been a 15% decrease in the last recorded year of April 2022-March 2023.

If we took ourselves off reading about crime on the internet and stopped watching 24hr news channels so much, I think our outlook on things would massively change. Society is no more fucked than it has been at any point since I’ve been conscious enough due to age to understand the world. Types of crimes are different (I had my identity stolen a few years back, something that never went on a century ago), but we’re no more likely to be a victim of crime than at any time in the last few decades.

Away from the internet, social media and news tv, out there in the real world in Great Britain, it is very pleasant with very nice people.

Only last night, as I was walking the short walk home from the Noel Gallagher gig at Wythenshawe Park, there was a group of five local people (four girls and a fella, all about mid-20s by the look of them) who were stood on the street as people were looking about a bit lost, on the maps on their phones and phoning for taxis; and this group were asking people if they needed any help and telling them how to get to the Met stop, the bus stop and which bus to get.

That won’t make the News, while naughty Nigel from Northenden who bashed his Nan over the head and took her purse probably will (I made that one up!).

Although, one thing that has changed for the worse is that everywhere is scruffy as fuck. Litter, fly tipping and grafitti is at an all-time high. There are more scruffy cunts about who have no pride in their appearance or the area they live in.
Stats eh?

This from ONS.Gov

Police recorded crime in England and Wales in the year ending March 2023 exceeded pre-coronavirus pandemic levels. The 6.7 million crimes recorded were 11% higher compared with the year ending March 2020 (6.1 million offences).

Recorded crime tells you as much about whether people think it's worth bothering reporting a crime as it does about how much crime there actually is. I think that crime survey they do is usually a better indicator.

It's also why other than murder, international comparisons of 'official' figures aren't usually that helpful either.

Jeez, the number of crimes committed over partygate were enough in themselves to send the stats sky rocketing.

Ah that’s alright then. I’ll leave it until we’ve got drug cartel gangs blowing up police stations with bazookas, the army on the streets in tanks and severed heads dangling off motorway bridges before I start to worry.

The police should have one job to do, maintain law and order. When you have kids looting the local Coop, youths all in black and hooded up cruising estates on bikes looking for targets, drugs being sold regularly on street corners and dirt bikes doing wheelies on main roads you know the police are not fit for purpose when their response is to provide a crime number.

The problem with the crime survey is its about perception. What people 30yrs ago would have complained about is now just part of life, its almost as if people have been conditioned into accepting low level crime, whether that be antisocial behaviour or vandalism. As for motoring offences, speeding in particular seems to have been forgotten about, likewise for the road worthiness of cars, the amount of cars you see with defective lights, illegal number plates, driving without insurance etc. Traffic police used to pull people for the most minor of things now, other than on a motorway you'd be had pressed to find one.

As a nation we’ve been gaslit for decades to thinking crime is normal. Even the label “petty crime” is bollocks.

Someone damaging or stealing your private property is not “petty”.

The Americans have the right idea, just shoot the cunts.

Speaking to a copper last night and he said part of the problems we face now is that the police are expected to be social workers, ambulance drivers, baby sitters etc instead of being out there on the streets. They expect the next big thing in terms of drugs to be Fentanyl and that because the ambulance service won't be able to cope they will be the ones who will be ferrying people to the hospital. Called to domestic incidents regularly because couples don't know how to behave towards each other and no sooner have they calmed down a situation and left, they are called bacl because the couples are at each others throats literally. And then you have parents who have no idea that their little Jonny is a thief, drug dealer, thug etc and moan like anything when they have been arrested and called to the station. Courts don't help with slaps on the wrist and the cycle repeats itself. Police force are understaffed by many thousand but as a society we have to take responsibility for our actions. When the kids are out looting what are the adults doing, probably helping them and encouraging them. I now that society is broken and everyone is skint but how does that justify some of the behaviour that occurs.
