Crime on the rise / is society f*cked?

Its positively crazy that there are only 207 police officers per 100k people in the UK. The only European countries with less being Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland, who have much smaller populations. But more importantly, much more equal societies and for that matter happier according to whole swathes of research, albeit that a high rate of suicides still exists in Finland.

The problem with the crime survey is its about perception. What people 30yrs ago would have complained about is now just part of life, its almost as if people have been conditioned into accepting low level crime, whether that be antisocial behaviour or vandalism. As for motoring offences, speeding in particular seems to have been forgotten about, likewise for the road worthiness of cars, the amount of cars you see with defective lights, illegal number plates, driving without insurance etc. Traffic police used to pull people for the most minor of things now, other than on a motorway you'd be had pressed to find one.
Not really. Doesn't the crime survey just ask people if they've been a victim of a crime in the last 12 months?

Speaking to a copper last night and he said part of the problems we face now is that the police are expected to be social workers, ambulance drivers, baby sitters etc instead of being out there on the streets. They expect the next big thing in terms of drugs to be Fentanyl and that because the ambulance service won't be able to cope they will be the ones who will be ferrying people to the hospital. Called to domestic incidents regularly because couples don't know how to behave towards each other and no sooner have they calmed down a situation and left, they are called bacl because the couples are at each others throats literally. And then you have parents who have no idea that their little Jonny is a thief, drug dealer, thug etc and moan like anything when they have been arrested and called to the station. Courts don't help with slaps on the wrist and the cycle repeats itself. Police force are understaffed by many thousand but as a society we have to take responsibility for our actions. When the kids are out looting what are the adults doing, probably helping them and encouraging them. I now that society is broken and everyone is skint but how does that justify some of the behaviour that occurs.
Yep, like the NHS, a lot of the cuts are hidden because they're in the support services. Care services get cut and suddenly you need extra hospital beds to deal with it. Mental health, youth services, homelessness, etc, are cut and the police are expected to mop up the resulting mess.

But how you classify a crime at a personal level will be dependent upon your tolerance to crime.
If you were in Cheetham Hill and saw someone being antisocial, because its more common you'd be more likely to brush it off as unimportant, same thing happening in Bowdon and you'd expect the rozzers around instantly. Likewise you will probably get more apathy towards the survey in poorer, high crime areas.

Perhaps, but unless these attitudes are new, that would always be the case. So it's still a good measure of crime rates compared to the police reports. Police will often see a huge increase in a particular type of crime because it's something they're focusing on particularly at the moment.

Dunno it’s alway difficult and there’s no simple answer. The concern is that the people just accept certain types of crime over time, which leads to stabilised figures or falling figures when the reality is rather different.
As you say the more of a particular crime they look for the more they detect, but that’s a worry in itself and clearly points to underfunding in the detection of crime in general.

It’s probably not the right place, but the absolutely devastating news of the death in service of Sgt Graham Saville has been announced this evening.

Graham was struck by a train near Newark last Thursday evening.

Graham was a Nottinghamshire police officer like myself. It’s a small force and like a big family. I didn’t know Graham personally but I knew who he was but the news tonight is heartbreaking for his young family, his parents, seeing him like that after the incident; and also for the officers who helped him on the night it happened.

Graham died in the line of duty; a hero helping to save someone else’s life. It’s a hard job trying to keep it together on the frontline and tonight he has paid the ultimate price for his bravery.

RIP Sarge.

The police should have one job to do, maintain law and order. When you have kids looting the local Coop, youths all in black and hooded up cruising estates on bikes looking for targets, drugs being sold regularly on street corners and dirt bikes doing wheelies on main roads you know the police are not fit for purpose when their response is to provide a crime number.
You live round here too?

Unfortunately they have to wear many hats.

Problem solved if everyone moved to Emmerdale! Just watched 5 mins of the rubbish as wife is a fan. Lost necklace found suspiciously in pocket of family member who denied all knowledge. Call made directly to police and answered after 2 rings. Copper on scene 5 minutes later interviewing.
I hate soaps and wonder sometimes if they would be better received if they represented the reality.
