He's not a bridle horse. There's a difference between being off the bit and not travelling. He's always going to be driven for most of the last circuit, he's gutsy and responds to pressure. He'd have been on the bit a while longer if Pentiffic hadn't been sent on as far as he was, Tom Scu had to go after him.

That's why he suits the national, he needs further than 3m2f for starters, but you don't win the National on the bridle. Horses that find plenty under pressure and can stay all day win the national. I maintain that if he gets a clear round, he's in the top three at the finish.

Bit surprised he's not had much praise on here for that run today (he has in the racing circles), he's run an absolute blinder giving nearly two stone away and a few hamperings. Maybe people just a tad disappointed they've lost money, understandable, so am I!

Don't get me wrong I wasn't criticising him, just on what I've seen I wouldn't back him in the national. To be honest, what I know about horse racing is not worth knowing, I'll take D.Pipe's word over mine every day of the week ;)

I do like Tom Scu as a jockey though, is he riding him at the national?

Thanks lads. Kind words.

I really dont think the horse was unlucky at all,he had more than enough time to get his head in front after the last & thought that ikorodu road outbattled him & deserved it more....i certainly wouldnt say the hammpering cost him the race as it states in most written reviews.

Dont think he is a national horse at all not if he cant win a little 6 runner race where the fav withdrew an hour before.

Decent horse though mark & still big prizes to be had with the animal.

Tend to go with this.
Fair play to Scu for even getting within a short head, because Junior never travelled or looked interested for me.
And he is lazier than a scouser with a sick note.
No point moaning about the weights - that's what handicaps are all about, and the truly great horses defy them.
I just feel he has found his level, and it is a fair one,but not top class.
And fourteens for the National won't be tempting me.

With regards the National and Junior if i see money going down I will b on the Pipe yard as a whole love a gamble and more times than not they win granted it is the National and anything could happen anyway Mark all the best

If Junior gets round then there is no doubt for me that he will be in a place, i just dont think his jumping is good enough to get round. Its all opinions though, and the horse will probably improve for the run.

I have also noted that some have mentioned about Scu scrubbing Junior along, alot of horses are like that, it'll stay, i havent a doubt about that.

Wouldnt back Junior anyway as he doesnt convince me with his jumping and in the National you need a horse that can travel and he cant. If the jockey is pushing him along for the last 2 miles then hes not going to see a stride for every fence and could result in a bad fall. You look at the National and the winner will hardly be touched until the 6f pole.
Got my eye on a few for the National but all depends on how or if they run at Cheltenham. Black Apalachi is the only one ive backed already as he will most likely head straight to Aintree.

Thought junior ran a good race but i dont see him getting round aintree. Ihave backed shakalakaboomboom, a good weight and the national is the target. The other one ilike is becauseicouldntsee, again i think it will be trained for the national and i like the horses profile.perhaps one of the lads with irish connections have a veiw?
May have a bit on carrickmines at huntingdon today.its been in top company without landing a blow, in a poor race today off a dangerous looking mark with a top jockey back on board. Has run well at ascot in a hurdle race last dec and i rate ascot form the best around.

I think i've missed something.

Junior can't travel? You think because he's off the bridle that isn't travelling? I've ridden before so maybe I look at it differently, but a horse being off the bit doesn't mean he isn't travelling. It's about the length of the reign and how he responds to it. There is also the pace of the race to consider, as was the case yesterday. He was on the bridle until Pentiffic was sent on, Scu let him go initially but then had to go after him, released his reigns and gave him a tap on the shoulder which signals the horse to speed up. The pace was a little too quick because he wants a further distance so he had to be scrubbed along to keep up with the pace (as were the other horses in the race, including the winner). At no point in the race did he 'not travel'. Horses are different in personality, you get horses like Cue Card that travel on the bridle and could probably finish the race on the bridle but when asked the question finds quite little. Junior finds plenty every time. A question of a horses character is what they can find and how far they can stay. Pegasus himself wouldn't win the National on the bridle, its a race that is set up for stamina and guts. Junior has both, and whilst he doesnt have the technical ability of the best horses, he has plenty of spirit. That's why he won't win a gold cup but will do well in a grand national.

I'm not saying Junior will win the national, or that he's good enough to. Im saying his character suits the needs of the race, perhaps more than others.

As for yesterday. Any notion that the weights don't matter when your neck and neck on a run in with a horse 2 stone lighter is complete nonsense i'm afraid, its a matter of physics if nothing else. It's also very clear that the winner is extremely well handicapped and he's been added to my notebook for his next run. Will be interested to see how far he is put up.

I personally think Junior is a front runner, he's not a horse that can come off the pace unless the leaders come back to him. He's a horse that digs in and stays. I'd have him sent on whenever he runs, and I think Scu wanted to but Pentiffic went off too quick. For the national, its imperitive he get's well placed early with the leaders or his chance will be gone before the 2nd fence. Also needs to brush up his jumping to get round.

To clarify, i'm not sat here saying he will win the National, or he is better than the other horses in it. I'm merely giving a retort to some of the suggestions on here, because one or two statements made at him and his character are more than absurd.
