Welcome Dani, now Spurs can keep Walker for another year and I am sure his value will never be higher.

Maicon was great for a couple of years under Mourinho at Inter, definitely, but it was 2 or 3 years, not even that. Alves has been in the top 2/3 in his position pretty much every year for a decade. To be honest it's so immediately obvious just looking at them that they are completely different players that it's hard to imagine anyone thinking they're comparable.

...and in '07 when they won the Copa America? How've they got on in that competition since Maicon left the setup?

I'm not arguing the longevity of Alves' career compared to Maicon. I'm saying prime for prime Maicon was preferred (and I'm not sure Alves has ever had a better individual season than Maicon 09/10).

They're comparable in that they're both obviously attack orientated fullbacks with a penchant for being caught out defensively.

Just to prove we were conceding chances v real Madrid.

Maicon did fuck all, same as the rest, & Alves was no worse than any of them in that vid, this season, v Real Madrid is my point.

He might actually have been better, than the passive defending we see from everyone bar Kompany (defending, not that well, on his own) that we see in that vid, which was City at their peak fitness.

Real Madrid is no game to judge Alves.
 
Why are we even comparing Maicon and Alves when one knows Pep system in and out and would obviously be a better fit.

But that's not true. It's lazy, tired bullshit. it's like saying Andros Townsend and Sterling are the same because they're both English wingers.

Alves is a great defender for modern football. Doubly so in a Guardiola team, where he's defending space, he's pushing wingers back into their own half because they are struggling to deal with him, he's superb 1v1, and he knows exactly what position to be in. He's brilliant at stepping into midfield and winning the ball back before an attack can start, or even to make sure the ball isn't lost in the first place. He is an outstanding defender for any team who considers themselves to be possession based.

Difference between Barcelona with Alves and Barcelona without? Conceding 30% more goals.

Maicon, yes, he would push up and then rely on his pace and physicality to make up for mistakes, in many ways like Walker before Pochettino got his hands on him, but that's why he was gone so quickly, being one of the best in the world for only 2 years, he had nothing upstairs, he was figured out.

He's playing in a back 5 with Bonucci/Chiellini/Barzagli/Sandro, not sure how you couldn't worry for him playing in our back line in a much quicker league when he's struggling with the pace in certain CL games playing with 4 world class defenders alongside.

What we do know is that he knows exactly how he needs to play in Peps System, and can be the benchmark for the others to reach. As Graham Hunter described in BillyShears podcast, he would be a template signing. One that all the rest of the squad should look to matching

I disagree. He has been caught out plenty of times over the years, one of the reasons top clubs keep moving him on and replacing instead of keeping him around.

Feel like this'll go round in circles tbh so we'll just wait and see what happens next season. I hope he can adapt (and it is more hope than expectation).
