David Bernstein Q&A for KOTK

No chairman ever gets it entirely right. But Bernstein was one of that rare breed-you knew he was focused on getting us back to where we should be. Because he is a Blue.

We've been lucky with Sheikh Mansour, and unlucky with Swales, but many clubs will never get a Bernstein. A bloke who loves the club, doesn't make ridiculous promises and does the boring stuff well. Nothing flashy, but many clubs would kill to have someone like that.

The difference being Bernstein wasn't the owner. Makin and Wardle owned the club between them (or should i say were the majority shareholders) and they put Bernstein in charge to run the club - and he did so brilliantly up until the Fowler episode when Keegan threw his dummy out

He came on as Sub in a Pre Season game against PNE to no great effect. That’s the only time I recall him getting on the pitch.
Pretty sure he came on or started in a pre-season away fixture at Bury. Think we won 3-2 or 4-3? He didn't score.

I was at the Bury one and think he played. I wasn't at Rochdale, so I won't be mixing them up, it's just whether my memory is anywhere near reliable...

And I think it was 4-3 too.

Pretty sure it was Bury, but I've definitely never been to Spotland so it wasn't the Rochdale one.

Thanks PB.

Very interesting.

That day will haunt the club and the fans forever.

I’m still not over it.
I didn’t realise until a couple of months ago but my eldest (now 17) was utterly haunted by that day….I thought a trip to the services on the way home from Wembley for a Burger King would have softened the blow, didn’t work seemingly.

I remember "Kenny Carr" (I can't remember his real name) came on as a sub at Rochdale in a pre season game under Keagan, and I think he scored.

Never saw or heard of him again, maybe he was just a trialist:-)
Bernarbia's mate Karim Kerkar.

Vuoso played the second half in the Bury and PNE friendlies, but started the Dale one when he scored.
