Even the rags are singing his praises.

One of the most gifted footballers ive ever witnessed.

Couldn't help myself but look on there, and surprisingly I found something interesting that I'd not really considered before. Someone was defending Silva's record on assists maybe not being as high as you would expect.

He said Silva is more of a guy that "assists the assist." Now it sounds like bollocks, but I actually think there's some merit in what he was trying to say.

You assume the player with the highest assists must be the most creative player. But when you look at the stats, James Milner's assists per game is not far behind Silva's. But I'm sure even the most ardent Milner fan wouldn't put him in the same league as Silva in terms of creativity.

It got me thinking about assists in general. When you analyse it, it's not very often that a player will win the ball, skin 5 players, then lay it across for his mate to tap in. Usually, especially at City, there is a move of 5 or 6 passes leading up to us scoring a goal. A lot of the time the final pass (the assist) is not necessarily the most important one in the passage of play leading up to a goal.

It is the (as Scholes and Neville put it on Tuesday) the "risky" pass which is the important one. The one that opens a team up, puts them on the back foot, creates panic in the opposition, exploits the space in a defence. Silva is without question the best player in the league at playing that pass. Possibly the best in Europe.
Absolutely this....
Yep. Argued the very point numerous times with people last season who were using assist stats to 'prove' that Mata is better than Silva. Which is, was, and always will be utter bollocks.
Just another example of where stats, in and of themselves, pale against what you can see with your own eyes during the game.

For anyone who hasn't yet witnessed City in recent times high up in the gods (either home or away) I'd seriously recommend it if only to concentrate on David's movement and eye for a pass.

This.

Took about 5 minutes during the Fulham game and just focused on Silva, and its just mesmeric watching what he does off and on the ball. Hes ALWAYS in the right position, waiting for the ball, connecting players and delivering exquisite balls, i fully recommend for the game against Arsenal just to watch him for a bit, hes so incredible to watch on his own.

He's the most aesthetically pleasing footballer I've ever seen, he's pure and simple football porn.

That's because he spends the whole match instinctively looking for space. He's always available. And to our great credit, our players are constantly looking for him too. And when he receives the ball he has already decided what he is going to do with it, so his first touch is a precursor to his next touch and so on, all of which are done with his body instinctively turned to protect the ball.

I swear you could put him to classical music and it would be better than ballet. Put him to Bolero and he'd get 6.0 across the board.

Let's hope we get the chance - any updates on his ankle knock?

-- Fri Mar 28, 2014 6:18 pm --
