All players have good and bad points, we take them into account when we rate them. That assessment results in what we call great players or 'fan favourites' as you choose to call them. Are you suggesting that isn't the case with Merlin because his good points are so good we simply don't notice that he's not a monster in the air like Dave Watson or a mantrap tackler in the mould of Gerry Gow?

While it hasn't been Dave's best season by any stretch - for a number of reasons - I am fed up with the "Silva is shit/finished" argument that seems to have become a fashionable opinion on here recently.

Perhaps you should read the post from sh249 he argues that Silva's contribution on Tuesday was much more impressive than he was given credit for. One thing that probably does go against him and it is often noted is his relatively poor goal scoring record. But on balance he offers a lot and if this injury can be sorted out I am sure he can be much better next season.

Even Silva's biggest fans happily acknowledge that he has very little pace, isn't an aerial threat, is one footed, has poor finishing ability and doesnt have the highest work rate in terms of his defensive contribution. I readily accept these faults and aren't "blind" to them. Before this season, David wasn't being referred to as a fans favourite but a genuinely world class player and a vital part of the squad.

A few months later and people are already questioning whether he was ever that. I can't speak for you and what you previously made of him but many of the posts on this thread appear fickle in their revisionism.
