David White

Hold up here. This is the 1st topic to make me feel old and I've just turned 31 (not that old is it?) and the OP has just said he doesn't remember David White. He Was my hero growing up watching from the stands. Pace to burn and a regular goal scorer. Always pretended to be him in the school playground and local park as a wee lad.

Am I now officially old?

Great seeing those goals from Villa Park again. I was delayed getting out of work that night but somehow found a parking space close to the ground and got in to see the rout. We also had seats down the side of the ground on that occasion as well as behind the goals.
The following season he scored quite a few including three as we won 5-2 at Boundary Park on the final day.
We finished 5th in both 90-91 and 91-92 with Whitey in the team, our highest finishes until 2010.

Was the main guy when I first started watching. He flattered to deceive. Not saying he was shite but not as good as most think. Wouldn't get near today's squad. He would score at a mid table team but never a top 5 player.

His one England game against Spain was awful.

Not entirely his fault!

That utter nob Graham Taylor played him as a left back, a position he'd never played at! (this was at the time he was playing, and on fire, either, as a left winger or centre forward for City),

If he would have scored that chance in the second minute, then, who knows?

He had a pretty average first half after that, and, probably would have got another chance at playing for England, but, for one person.

That tw@ jimmy hill spent the total half time 'expert analysis' destroying David White. Never mentioned, or was critical of any another player, a total hatchet job.

At the time, for some incredible reason, hill carried some weight with the media, and as such the media, as it was then, made David out to be the whipping boy - IMHO the lad never recovered.

I am not making excuses for him. I am just putting forward my opinion. He was the 2nd best player in THAT youth team without a doubt.

Who knows, David White & Paul Lake in tandem at the top level?

And, I still fcuking hate jimmy hill!

So who was the David White who scored the goals when we finished 5th (I think that's in the top 5) in 90-91 and 91-92?

Top 5 now numpty. I'm comparing him to now. So how highly did you rate him then. I watched him every week. He was one of our best player no doubt. But he wasn't too level.

I remember Taylor playing Keith Curle at right back v Denmark but I'm pretty sure he played White up front with Clough supplying him. He didn't play badly, just a world class keeper managed to block the best chance with his feet, and the other chance where the gap was left at front past with the keeper out of position was never nailed on with a decent save.

Always rated him - great player, a bit mean to say he wouldn't fit in the current game cos tbh only the true greats are timeless. But my sister (who was besotted with him!) went off him when he didn't reply to her fan mail ;)

his grandad didn't come out very well in that cyril smith documentary so maybe he keeps a low profile these days (bit hard to with his current size..)

D'oh! course it was!

Good shout.

Just remember at the time, and to be fair even now, I couldn't care less about England 'cos City players didn't get near.

Not entirely his fault!

How good was he? Albeit I am not old enough to remember seeing him play, but from old city games that I see, he has always struck me as a fantastic player in a group of brilliant prospects such as Lake, Brightwell, Hinchcliffe, etc. Or am I mistaken?

"Oh David White, is fucking fast,
Oh David White is fucking fast.
He's fast, fast and more fast,
Oh David White is fucking fast"

I haven't seen a player faster than him (that includes Bale, Nevas) but skill wise there were many better than him.

Lightening quick speed. Often let down by the final pass. However in the season we played him through the middle up top he scored 20+ that season.

We had some speed machines back then, White, Curle, Phelan.
