David White

His one England game against Spain was awful.

Not entirely his fault!

That utter nob Graham Taylor played him as a left back, a position he'd never played at! (this was at the time he was playing, and on fire, either, as a left winger or centre forward for City),

If he would have scored that chance in the second minute, then, who knows?

He had a pretty average first half after that, and, probably would have got another chance at playing for England, but, for one person.

That tw@ jimmy hill spent the total half time 'expert analysis' destroying David White. Never mentioned, or was critical of any another player, a total hatchet job.

At the time, for some incredible reason, hill carried some weight with the media, and as such the media, as it was then, made David out to be the whipping boy - IMHO the lad never recovered.

I am not making excuses for him. I am just putting forward my opinion. He was the 2nd best player in THAT youth team without a doubt.

Who knows, David White & Paul Lake in tandem at the top level?

And, I still fcuking hate jimmy hill!

I remember Taylor playing Keith Curle at right back v Denmark but I'm pretty sure he played White up front with Clough supplying him. He didn't play badly, just a world class keeper managed to block the best chance with his feet, and the other chance where the gap was left at front past with the keeper out of position was never nailed on with a decent save.

Bloody hell!

Keith Curle. I apologise my friend, course it was. Mexing my mitophers as the Rev Spooner said!

Far too many beers have clouded my memory, though, David never recovered from HIS England game.

Just remember being really pissed off with the chin!

jimmy hill is still a cnut!

Always will remember the chants of " Whitey , Whitey, Whitey" as he tore down the wing adjacent the Kippax before rocketing a 20 yarder into the North Stand goal. I seem to remember him doing this quite a lot. I was a big fan of White mainly for his goals but for some reason some fans did not rate him, just like Edghill, Power, Goater the early years and all the other scapegoats.

remember going to villa , we won 5-1 and he scored four , he was unplayable that night , he could beat any fulll back for pace , and scored his fair share of goals for a winger . He got an england cap and i thought he went downhill after that , but always gave 100% for us . Amazed we didnt have more success with the players from the 86 youth team lake, brightwell, hinchcliffe, redmond, white, moulden, scott etc all made it to the 1st team .

Everyone seemed to love him,, I personally thought he was a speed merchant with nowt else ,,, very, very overrated as his England performance shown.

Couldn't agree more, but he tried his best whenever he pulled on a blue shirt, and could rarely be faulted for lack of effort. Sadly the professional game requires more than just a turn of pace.

I find that a bit patronising.

White was a very good player of first division standard.

Blatent plug i know - but David White's complete city career (and beyond) is all in this book!

His lack of skill would have been cruelly exposed in the modern game.

A 1990's player who was very much "of his time".
Tend to agree, it's a different world in terms of skill and fitness nowadays, to be fair I thought he was an average player who had occasional good games,

Pace was more than half of his game, but to be honest the rest of his skill levels were up with the standard of the day too.

He was one of those players who you knew would fade out of football fairly quickly once the turbo effect had gone, but while he had it he could use it to very good effect.

In his pomp he could push the ball in the space behind the defender, give him 5 yards start and still beat him to it.
