De Bruyne?

Hi Matty, I agree mate...these deals are not easy but there is a pattern showing with our transfers...we seem to follow the same process in every transaction....Every player is different but we seem to treat every transaction with the same slowly, slowly, careful approach.....I'm no expert and not saying this is wrong...just getting frustrating when you see a player like Vidal..... price agreed, terms agreed and sold within 7-10days of making contact.....They had a need and acted on it.....would be alot less frustrating if it didnt take months to do a deal!;).......I do agree tho.....getting the player is the most important thing!;) cheers for the reply!;)

We have absolutely no idea when Bayern first made contact with Juventus over Vidal if we're being honest. There's no way of knowing. They could, just as easily, have discussed the deal with Juventus and Vidal prior to the Copa America, which would put it at well over a month. Technically City haven't made contact with Wolfsburg, officially, at all at this point so, technically, the clock hasn't started on this deal, it's really just paper talk at this stage. Obviously, in reality, everyone knows what's happening, but maybe Bayern and Juventus, in the case of Vidal, were happier for this not to be played out in the public eye. Wolfsburg need to be seen to be resisting before they sell for what needs to be seen as a "price they couldn't turn down", the same is true of the Pogba deal for City. Vidal, on the other hand, had been at Juventus for 4 years and Juve were happy to sell, hence that deal (on the face of it in any case) looking easier, and quicker, to complete.

Sometimes deals can be conducted very quickly indeed, but in the vast majority of cases, certainly when you're talking about the financial commitments City are looking to make, these things can be very complex, and complex deals take time to finalise.

City are seen as easy money though - maybe more difficult to negotiate

I know the Vidal deal came as a surprise because it was kept quiet, but I am not sure how typical that is. Look at Real Madrid and their protracted transfer negotiations for De Gea and for Bale, Ronaldo, etc. I don't think City are any different to most clubs. Some deals take ages, some don't depending on circumstances, but when the season is over and all you have is the transfer window it's about all there is football wise to concentrate on. Thankfully the new season is upon us. can't wait!

Looking forward to the Community Shield on Sunday. 12 months time it could be City. I'd dearly love to go back there again for a Cup Final.

That's simple! We are trying to sign world class players, but we don't have the pull of Real, Barca, Bayern yet. When those clubs come calling, the player doesn't say "I wouldn't mind going, but I'd be ok staying" like we are getting from KDB & Pogba. When they go for one of your players, the player says "It's my childhood dream to go there, I'm leaving", "I want to play with Messi/Xavi/Ronaldo". The players are desperate and the clubs are resigned to being a step below those elite tier clubs, so they know they can't really keep the player anyway.

We don't have that pull yet. So we will need to scrap and fight for these big transfers, and they'll be drawn out and miserable and we'll be bored of how slow they move.

But when they come off, they will raise the profile of the team and the pull of the club. Then we will win things, and the pull gets stronger again. And in 10,15,20 years of winning things and being a major team in Europe we will start to rival the draw that the other elite European clubs have, and then when we want a player like KDB they will bend over backwards to join us, and it will happen in a week, not 2 months.

You make some good points mate! Just letting my frustrations of this deal get the better of me!;) I just find it hard to understand why Wolfsburg would be sat at the table waiting for a bid for weeks and we still havent even turned up yet!;) (i.e made a bid!).....thanks again mate!

You've, kind of, answered your own question! The reason City haven't made a formal bid is because we KNOW Wolfsburg have been sat at the table waiting for a bid for weeks. De Bruyne has been waiting for the bid too (we'll have been discussing terms with his agent in any case). If we'd come in with a bid as soon as our interest was noted then it would be rejected out of hand, regardless of what it was. This way we test Wolfsburg's resolve. They know De Bruyne's value is unlikely to be higher than it currently is, so it's in their interests to sell at this stage, if we wait, and wait, and then come in with a reasonable offer then Wolfsburg are more likely to be receptive, as they'll know time is short.

The rumours around this deal are that Wolfsburg need to show their fans they received a good fee, and also don't want to pay De Bruyne his loyalty payment (which will be something like £4m/£5m). Equally De Bruyne doesn't want to destroy his reputation by demanding a move, plus he doesn't want to give up the aforementioned loyalty payment. Something has to give, or else De Bruyne remains a Wolfsburg player.
