''Dead wood'' at work

Unfortunately I work in hospitality, shit industry, shit job, shit hours, shit pay. Fortunately for the last 20 years Ive been working in a one man department, I do my rota, Im responsible for my own work and I dont have to rely on anyone else or work with anyone else very often, which suits me fine.
Unfortunately 18 months ago everything changed, some virus or something, and I was shifted to another department where I have to work WITH shitheads under someone else's rota. Over the years Ive gained a reputation as a hard grafter and a standard setter with an eye for detail. Traits which are hard to come by these days. Traits which no one in this department has so naturaly I am being buttered up by the 'boss' and flogged. But Im one of those nice blokes who cant say no and cares too much about doing things right. I would give you my city shirt off my back. And when you are a hard working nice guy, you will be taken advantage of. Its soul, confidence and self esteem destroying and Im in a bad place because of it if Im being honest.
These people are a discrace, they get away with doing as little as possible while Im running round doing 3 peoples jobs in a department that isnt even mine. No wonder they call me speedy gonzalez, and the bloke in the suit they call scarecrow, go figure.
Thankfully my own job is starting to show signs of returning slowly, then it will be adios amigos, ariba.
Sorry to harp on, just had to get that off my chest.

For the last 40+ years I've run football teams and football leagues here in the North West. I had a team in the eighties, and this lad joined. He convinced my brother that the two of them were good enough to try out for Bury, where his dad had some tenuous connection. It would be generous to say they were bang average players, and didn't attend trials in the end.

About eight years later, this same lad applied to enter a team into the league in Manchester I was now secretary of. In his application, he gave all his impressive credentials, told us about his team, his financing, his football experience, where they would play etc., so we duly invited him to an interview.

After we'd gone through the vetting, I said, "So Peter, it says in your application you used to play for Altrincham. Tell us how you went from being one of my substitutes in the Manchester Students Pub League to playing for Altrincham FC." We both knew it was a load of made up rubbish, and he embarrassingly concocted some tale of justification.

I checked him out on LinkedIn earlier this week. He is an experienced Company Director, specialising in helping start up businesses to apply for finance. He comes highly recommended, and has over 400 connections. His firm went into liquidation in 2019. It struck me that he has probably blagged his way through life, and will soon be blagging his way through retirement. It's in his blood. Some people are just like that.

Is he Public/private school educated? :)

Ask anyone to do their job properly now and you'll be had up for bullying.

My mate has got a grievance against him for politely suggesting that the death of one's rabbit does not justify a day's compassionate leave.

A bloke where I work once came in upset that his rabbit had died. A mate simply replied “why didn’t you just change the batteries?”

made us all laugh
