Lost his place at Bayern to Badstuber in 2010/2011. Van Gaal promotes youth. That is why he left Munich in winter 2011 (like van Bommel did).

He was outstanding in some of the CL matches last year - sometimes I still follow his matches.

Has a lot experience and can even be used as a defensive midfielder - Malaga did a couple of times the recent two years e.g. against Real.

I can see him being used as a defensive midfielder quite a bit, especially with Barry on his way out
