Devante Cole: "City don't care about English kids"

True but even though Roberts is English he's still an expensive import and he has stalled Barker's progress.

By the way, Roberts might be better than Barker both now and in the long run but the difference is Roberts will have plenty of chances to find out if he's good enough where as Barker won't. That's the point that Cole is getting at, it just so happens to be that all the expensive imports are foreign.

No, Barker has stalled Barker's progress, if he wants it that much he'll work his arse off in training and makes it impossible for him not to be seen as the star, he'll make it. Sometimes you need to stop pointing the finger and overcome any adversity thrown at you. What do you want? Pelle to go "hey Brandon, look you did really well last season so here's the #7 shirt, go and enjoy yourself", doesn't work like that. You also seem to forget that Roberts is the most expensive import to the youth system, and is English.

You can see why england hasn't been producing enough talent lately when you see the attitude and sense of entitlement in the young players. If he honestly thinks the reason he wasn't given a chance in the first team was because of his nationality then he's not going to go far in the game. He was never anywhere near the first team, entirely because of his ability. Rather than looking at him self, working hard and trying to improve he seems more keen to play the blame game.

The fact that he couldn't even get a free transfer to a Championship side might show part of the reason why he couldn't get a game for the team with the best attack in the country. Maybe he'll work his way up the leagues and maybe even become a premier league player some day, but not unless his attitude improves a lot and he realises that he is the only one responsible for his career.

Lets face it cole if you was good enough you'd still be at City vying for a place onthe subs bench with Kelechi and Robbo.

Agree with the above and anyway Barker seems to be very much a left wing and Roberts is a right wing, how is Roberts impeding Barker?

This.

Another young player with the English disease of thinking they are messi only to find they are bob taylor.

"He seemed wasteful in front of goal, it was no surprise he was released"

"Clubs at this level want instant success and are able to buy ready made talent"

Surely the signing of Raheem Sterling for 44m/50m contradicts both these ideas? Our second most expensive club signing and he's been signed for potential. Not suggesting he doesn't have any, but it'd be interesting to see how much potential an academy lad could demonstrate given nearly as much game time as Sterling has had.

For what it's worth I tend to agree with WNRH and, to an extent, Cole. How long does a player have to be with us until we can genuinely call them one of our Academy kids?

Brahim is a Malaga kid, Ambrose is an Auxerre kid and so on. If they make it with us it's necessarily a bad thing but I don't think we'd be entitled to much of the credit with regards to their development.

I'd much rather see lads who've been with us for years given a chance. Unless we're signing genuine world beaters then what's the point in bringing lads through and when they get to a decent age (17/18ish) simply bringing in someone else who's arguably not that much - if any - better than them?

Where I don't agree with Cole is the xenophobic undertone at City which he suggests is present. I don't think there is, I think all the top clubs have a similar problem (if you see it as a problem) as us, and it needs to be addressed.

You are correct, there certainly is not a xenophobic undertone at City, if anything the xenophobia comes from the likes of Cole, backed up by the media ! Let's put this one to bed shall we ? The reason him and most English kids don't make it is because they are not good enough. If they were good enough then England might have made it through to at least one final of the 25 tournaments ( Euro and world cup ) that have taken place in the last 50 years ! Partly down to the FA and bad coaching, but also partly down to the attitude of English players, sadly.

dont agree with that how do you know he isn't working his ass off in training ? the problem for players like barker and roberts is they aren't being given enough game time. Barker has played about twenty minutes in the past month roberts has played only 2 full games all season. even nacho he's barely played. theres only so much training they can do they need games to prove themselves. 'if there good enough they will play' its clear as anything they have the talent they just need pelle to give them more minutes and have faith in them.
what pelle should have done was looked at barkers amazing form last season and thought we have a great young player here maybe we should loan him out or give him some minutes to prove he can be good enough. hopefully some of them get a chance tonight

Well I find it bizarre that people use Barker as some personal example of a travesty, my point was not that Barker isn't working hard, but that everyone pointing fingers does nothing and it's down to him to break through. Barker went to Oz and didn't show anything to me in the minutes he played, to be honest, and I would find it staggering that he "couldn't" find a loan, so some party somewhere has obviously prevented it. He can't "expect" to get into our current first team, but who knows, maybe tonight he might get a shot. I don't know why Barker isn't playing in the EDS, I can only assume the club think he's above that level and if so, then he must be on the verge of some game time, unlike the likes of Evans and Byrne who have been allowed out on loan.

With Silva/Nasri/Sterling/De Bruyne/Navas ahead of you, it was always going to be very difficult to get a look in, but with some injuries, tonight and Saturday are probably the first opportunity since the international break to give somebody new a go. Nasri needed minutes against Bournemouth and it backfired, but tonight I expect to see Roberts start, with Barker getting an appearance from the bench, but these guys have to step up and have the game won like the first-team would do. No point in them playing and getting knocked out like that Villa game, because that puts Manuel under unnecessary pressure and also will give him a cold shoulder to using them again. You have to hit the ground running in the first team. EDS fans can moan all they like, but it's up to the lads themselves to make it happen. Their life, their career, their opportunity. Put it this way, Pelle got swooned by Isco as a kid at Malaga, so he's open to youngsters, but they have to shine and really impress, and that's the way it should be.
