Diabetes

That's the Newcastle diet mate isn't it? This diet regime didn't work for everyone in the trials, it worked for you which is great but it wont work for everyone. Going on a 600 calorie diet and losing so much weight so quickly can't be healthy in itself and without the advice of your doctor depending on how far the diabetes is that would have to be tailored.

Just as a point of reference how long had you had diabetes and were you on Metformin and insulin injections?

It doesn't work for those who don't stick to the regime.

My symptoms(all the usual ones) started in late March. I went to the doc on 26th of April with the results above. (a1C was 12). I was on 1000mg Metformin straight away. I did 3 days of intensive research and started the diet within a week.

The success rates depend on how long you have had the condition and your age etc. I'd have to look at it further to see if the Newcastle diet is safe for the stage I am at and of course if it would be productive.

Watch Dr Jason Fung. Forget about how long and age. There are lots of cases which counter that argument.

I will post more details in a couple of weeks time after my 3 month A1C are done. However, I reversed my type 2 in 4 weeks. From a fasting level of 13.4 when first checked on the 26th of April to it's current 14 day average of 5.4. I was on metformin for the first month but in consultation with my endocrinologist stopped taking it mid June.

How did I do it?

Lost approximately 20% body weight. 88kg to 71kg at a rate of 1.5 to 2 kg per week.
Just bin ALL carbs. Intermittent fasting (I did one meal a day and no snacks) and limit calories (I started with a hard 600 but as my exercise increased I went up to 800-1000 per day).

Piece of piss.

Or you can do nothing and keep upping you metformin until it doesn't work then overdose on Insulin injections which WILL make you gain weight until they start amputating limbs.
Your choice.
Great post.
Intermit fasting needs to be looked at by anyone suffering any illness.
As does whole food fasting.
Look at any John Rose(Fasting) video on u tube.
Diabetes, like any illness can be turned around verh quickly if we simply stop eating ourselves to death and allow our ultra sensitive digestive systems to heal themselves.
There is so much toxic waste in our bodies which means the incredibly important lymphatic system cannot operate..the only way to naturally improve health is to break up the never ending pile of processed foods salt sugar whole grains etc etc which we pile into our bodies and then wonder why we have no energy.lack of energy leads to disease.
People really need to look at making their bodies akaline first thing in the morning with raw lemon juice and raw (locally produced honey) to ease the digestive process give themselves more energy...both lemon juice snd honey are anti inflammatory anti fungi anti bacterial etc etc..far more beneficial than tea and coffee with milk and sugar.
No disease can grow in an alkaline state. This was discovered in the early 1930s.
Yet the cancer research scam carries on,unabated.
Ho hum.

how long do you have to be "alkaline" to receive enough benefits to be able to eat "normally" the rest of the time? i.e. 5/2 shows good enough results on weight loss and health in many aspects, so what's the equivalent in "alkaline" terms?

good lad, great weight loss there which if you lost it quickly should help keep it off. I'm trying hard from a much worse position, seen a moderate change but know I'll have to do plenty more on the diet variety front to really succeed, but it's a start.

Get yourself into ketosis mate. It takes a few days of absolutely zero carbs but once you are in it you don't feel hungry anymore so the calorie restriction becomes easier. Only downside I had was "keto rash" which was as itchy as chicken pox for a while but I got over it.

most mondays are no eating. Trying to reduce carbs but it's small gains and controlling the variables in life I can at the moment which are the small wins. If I could settle down at home and cook for myself I could make quicker progress but life isn't that easy sometimes.

I was diagnosed with type2 at the end of May.
The nurse said Metformin was the way for me.
I'm already taking 3 different pills for high BP. I really didn't want to take more.
I read about metformin and fuck That, no way I'm taking that shit.
So I bought studied and started the 8 week blood sugar diet, about 6 weeks ago. I also quit the booze.
I've followed it religiously and must say some of the recipes are excellent. The chilli and fish pie ones in particular.
No bread, no chips, no mash, no pasta. After this time I can't say I miss them. I was diagnosed at 19 bsg initially. It's currently at 7 and I've almost lost 2 stone.
The stuff I've read says it can be reversed. I hope so.
The doctors and nurses don't give a shit. It's easier to dole out pills than spend time educating people. The way I feel at the moment is almost like an ambassador for this lifestyle. I tell everyone I deal with about the diet and I'm probably getting to the point of being a bore. But the proof of the pudding is in folk commenting on how well I look , noticing the weight loss and my general wellbeing.
Go for it, try it!
What you got to lose. I don't want them cutting bits off me as I get older. That's my inspiration.
Oh and my BP is down by 20/10 .

Fantastic stuff BOJ do you feel healthier? will you modify your diet later on when you're completely stable?

Strange isnt it.......

Do some exercise, don't eat shite or to excess, and you start looking, and feeling, better!

Who'd have thought??

Seriously though, fair play to those that have seen the light and educated themselves.

My 2 brothers and my mum are now diabetic,it's gone in age from mum down and i'm the youngest

I'm not there yet but i have gone down the low sugar route(aside from fruit and milk) and only eating twice a day,i have lost 3 stone most of it the dangerous belly fat,i wasn't really overweight for my height but the belly fat had to go

I slipped up at xmas,my birthday at easter in that order so i'm not perfect but i felt like crap every time and feel much better eating cleaner

I've done my best but if it gets me it's not for the want of trying to dodge it

I read the other day that the NHS were issuing 'lifestyle prescriptions' for the newly diagnosed. Basically a prescription for exercise, weight loss, dietary advice and cooking skills. The only problem being that it was for 12 weeks only, then you're left to yourself.

Really impressed with some of the responses on here, whenever I discuss starting medication for T2 DM I always say this can be reversed by improving diet an exercise the majority of patients cant stick to it though. The Newcastle diet scares a lot of folk but lower carbs diets appear to be more accepted and tend to direct them to http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet/low-carb-diabetes-diet.html to start. Also the X-pert patient groups are useful especially in Manchester.

We are also slightly hamstrung by recent cases of patients suing their Dr for not starting medication in the pre-diabetes stage (theres an argument about whether this truly exists) which encourages to go straight to medication rather than reviewing again in a few months. I would much prefer to really push exercise, weight loss and healthy eating as this helps from a cardiovascular and a mental health point of view.

Now then how do we get city to stop selling pie and chips>????

The issue I am going to discuss with my Dr is the calorie amount because I have a genuine fear of having a hypo with 600 calories a day. I can't see the harm in cutting out carbs to see how I go and it's worth a shot.

The food industry and pharma are cap in hand keep you sick but keep you alive means ££££ too many prescription docs to treat symptoms instead of route causes too much dosh involved. That's why I don't trust every clinical study sometimes you have to look at who is funding these trials usually one of the big sugar companies. Look after your own health people blood pressure monitors are cheap, blood sugar meters check pre and post meal blood sugar levels foods that spike you into another planet restrict or cut them out.
