He then says that maybe someone may surprise and be able to make the step up to the 'professional' level.
This to me condemns him as a man who is not interested in youth development unless the players are that good they demand to be in the first team. Unfortunately talent at that level is few and far between , proper youth development requires having faith in a young player and sometimes giving him the chance in the team ahead of a more experienced player.
He then moans about us not signing world class players because of ffp.
He needs to go in my opinion , we need someone who is prepared to blood young players and is happy give chances to the undoubted young talent we have.
We need to start adopting the holistic 433 at first team level, the players that we have been linked to would indictate that we are going to.....sterling , de bruyne , Barkley , Pogba would not be suited to slow build up play in pellegrinis 4222
So, so easy to say that. Maybe we haven't been blooding any youngsters because none of them are good enough? You can bet your house if the next man puts Angelino out there during a run of 5 defeats on the bounce he won't be getting any slack from fans to blood anyone - Angelino will be offered a free car journey to his club of choice by a number of blues and the manager will be out on his arse. Your last paragraph probably goes a long way to explaining why no-one has made the step up yet - We have an academy full of players everyone wants to see play for the first team, and at the first opportunity to spend big we're going to go out and buy a shedload of new expensive young players! That's not just Pellegrini driving that.
People forget that whilst developing youth and playing attractive football are important to our owners, the most important thing by far is staying in the Champions League. In case anyone hadn't noticed, we're currently 4th, and that's without any youth players featuring. Of course you could say "Well then, clearly isn't working, try youth! Can't be much worse", but clearly it can. We could be out of the CL players all together.
The foundations upon which everything else will be built in the Financial Fair Play world is revenue. And that comes by challenging at the very top, in the best competitions, and ideally winning them from time to time. This season is demonstrating how easily we could be dumped out - You don't take the chance unless you're pretty damn sure.
So what you are is that we only use player from the academy when there is no risk involved , when you can guarantee that they will be a success. We may be waiting a long time then....
FFP has begun to bite, our first team is growing old together and it has limited our appeal to attract the best players in the world. The one advantage we did have , which was throwing around massive contacts , has now gone...as this is now the going rate
Adopting the model we have currently have, that is signing a squad full of imported talent , will slowly see the standard of the squad reduce over the next few years as we are now operating in a level playing field. Our competitive advantage is that we can invest UNLIMITED money into the academy with no restriction, everyone else can of course but our owners have the cash flow that NO ONE else does. We must leverage this , and we may as well start doing it as soon as possible
On your first point, not quite no risk, but very little risk yeah. You can chuck players in and out of the odd league cup squad, but really anyone ready to get into our first team on a long term basis should either be tearing it up at another club on loan or so freaking good we *know* he's going to make it, and they're fast tracked into the first team as soon as we think they're physically up to it.
Second point partly agreed, but there are only so many players and so many clubs. Our revenue is going to put us among the very richest (In spending terms at least) and still able to hand out the biggest contracts. We'll get our fair share of top class talent this way.
The first part of your third point I don't agree. Our squad quality has been going down because we've been buying the wrong players. Loads of great players have moved clubs over the past few windows that we should have been on like a fat kid on a badly made sandwich, but for whatever reason, recently FFP, we've been unable or unwilling to get them.
The second part I agree completely. We can carve out a huge advantage with the academy, and I hope it continues to get unrivaled investment. Remember though that the academy in its current format has existed for no time at all. Just because the buildings are grand and shiny doesn't mean we have any first team footballers in them yet. Hopefully we will, but with all the facilities in the world the thought of producing the mainstay of the first team from a single academy is and will forever be a pipe dream. Other clubs will invest hugely in their academies and our advantage will diminish. It will continue to be a balancing act between imports and homegrown, depending on whatever shite Greg Dyke manages to dream up next.
Don't get me wrong, I would love for us to bring through a raft of club trained players that bleed blue, dream of City, and bust out into a chorus of hark now hear every time they're asked who they support, but like LC says above, it's sentimental mush. We'll get one or two players through every few years at best, maybe a golden generation every 3 decades if we're very lucky. Just think for a second how many academies there are in the world, and how many players they're training. All the players our youth scouts passed over, or all the ones we were beaten too by other top clubs.. It's always going to be easier when you're as rich as we are to just see where some players end up and buy them when they're either the finished article or very close.
