I'd say Capaldi's time is the best parallel to the last two Classic seasons we've got since the revival. Darker, defined more by the intense relationship by the Doctor and his companion than anything else. More than any before or since, his era demands a rewatch. The writing is genuinely prestige-quality, but a general sense of tiredness that the show had accumulated after so long back as a sensation had made people ready to pull the trigger with any mistakes, and the first series did stumble a few times. But go back to it and there's oceans of depth. That first scene between Capaldi and Coleman in the restaurant in Deep Breath has more wit, charisma, and character than 90% of telly manages in a whole series.
