You're right, the US of today isn't comparable. But the day Dumb Donald gets back into office that won't be the case. His lawyers are in court arguing that a sitting POTUS is immune from prosecution of all crimes up to and including the murder of his political enemies and his advisors have already endorsed turning the military on American citizens. He's running ads about taking ridding the government of all "deep state" operatives (ie anybody who wants to limit his power). What does that mean? It means judges will either clear the way for him to do what he wants or they'll be killed. He's also talked about banning news outlets who criticize him so that's another check that will be gone. So we'll have a Putin-loving egomaniac with a thirst for vengeance in charge of the most powerful military on the planet.

He also praises Putin, Xi and Kim Jong Un for being smart because the "rule with an iron fist" (he's said this many times) and has nothing but disdain for the democracies of western Europe because their leaders don't say nice things about him. Dissolving NATO would probably happen in the first month or two and then Putin would be free to start invading former Soviet states, Poland and other countries in eastern Europe. At that point fascists in Germany/Italy would start with the terrorist attacks and the movement will spread. This is not a joke, he's deadly serious about these things and talks about them openly. They just had their head of propaganda (Tucker Carlson) over in Russia interviewing Putin and trying to make him look good to American voters. They've also had Orban speak at their GQP conferences in the US. They've gone way beyond the flirting stage with fascists and are now giving them an under-the-table hand jibber.

Worth noting the President doesn’t have the power to pull out of NATO, needs a 2/3 majority in the Senate.

That was passed last year even with this current joke of a Congress.

The thing that should really irritate NATO allies about his comments is that article 5 has been invoked exactly once. When the USA was attacked on September 11th, NATO lined up as per its international obligations and hundreds of troops from the UK and 30 other NATO countries and allies have since died in the name of responding to an attack on US sovereign territory. When their situation was dire, NATO came to help. Because that was the deal.

Now Europe is under threat and this **** is encouraging Russia to do its worst and would pull out of NATO in a heartbeat if he had the chance. Hundreds of young men came through Wootton Bassett dead in boxes in the name of this alliance, and Trump might as well be telling them all to get fucked. Beyond shameful. And shame on those who would vote for him. Absolute snivelling dishonourable traitors of the worst kind.

That's because this cult don't think about concepts like loyalty and human life - it doesn't even enter their brain for a second - their only argument is about money, and even that is wrong. They erroneously think that as some NATO countries don't meet the 2% GDP target spend on their military, that the US is somehow paying for this shortfall. As if it was like a subscription fee that they are subsidising. Obviously, that's not at all how it works, but they aren't exactly a brain trust.

They don't realise that the US voluntarily spends trillions on defence because it confers enormous economic and geopolitical benefits, and that they could reduce this drastically if they wanted to of their own volition - no, they think somehow this huge amount of spending is actually the other NATO countries' fault.

Some of his dumb supporters blamed Obama for 9/11, and at the time Trump just bragged about having the tallest building in Lower Manhattan after the WTC buildings came down. He wouldn’t give a flying fuck about hundreds of foreign troops dying in military action to support the US in the aftermath. In fact he’d consider them suckers and losers like he did with his own countrymen who have died in service of their country over the years. How anyone could even consider voting for that piece of shit is totally beyond me and that applies whoever the alternative is.
