Dunno mate, I do it at least 3 times a week, although I know I'm going to know people in the pubs, wether that's friends, barmaids, landlords or just general people who I know but wouldn't class as friends.
Number, rather than frequency :-)

Yeah to be fair you are quite a lot, lot older than me!
Maybe so, but I bet I beat your current total by the time I was 30 :-)

Used to travel a lot, woman at a bar in chicago and dallas airport knew me on a first name basis it got that bad.
Then again i didn't want to go near the food hall bit due to thousands of yanks ransacking every eaterie available.
Doubt i would have got out alive so a pint and a pack of crisps it is for me a lot of the time.

I will always stop for a pint if i see a nice pub and i feel a thirst coming on.

Was it business travel? - If so i hope you expensed all those pints :P

Are there any pubs in town for a 30 year old, where this can be acceptable?

All of them.

Any good ones? I'm tired of soulless bars and want to visit and be a regular at pubs even if it means going on my own.

Well eveyone likes different shit but a few I quite like in town:

The Vine
The City
Waterhouse, Wetherspoons.... All next door to each other, just off St.Peters Sq.

Ape and Apple, just off Deansgate.

Monroes, London Road, right outside Piccadilly Station.

The Angel, Corner of Rochdale Road/ Angel St.

Crown and Anchor, Shambles Sq.

Castle, Oldham St.

Shakespheare, Fountain St.

Port Street Beer House is a good one for lone drinking, just down the amount of different beers in there. Its always full of beer lovers on their own enjoying a pint

I think when you work away a lot you just get used to it, love sitting down with a pint of "premium beer" a paper and my own company, drinking "premium beer" could make that a prerequisite mind:)

There is no finer way of passing a couple of hours on your own than sat with the papers and a few pints. You cannot call yourself a man if you do not do this. Don't feel sad or 'old before your time', it is a laudible way of spending your time.

Often when I'm away for weekend breaks with the wife, I've got beyond walking around the shops with her, I just buy some papers, turn on the ipod and sit in a boozer by myself sometimes for a whole afternoon. If footie is on I'll watch that that and just chat to total strangers who have a similar interest in football.

The thing is you meet more people when your on your own if your in the mood for a chat because you make an effort, I can be like a tour guide in the hotel I stay with the cragg rats if they don't piss me off.
