We have. They’ve been doing it for years. Teams are not defending any differently against us than they were since that run of games at the start of the 2011-12 season when we were scoring a load of goals. Ever since teams woke up to how good we were then, it’s been parked buses most weeks. We have never seen teams line up the way opponents do against us now. Never. Pearce’s response would be to shove Eddie up front.
Hang on...
But we had any combination of Silva Kun Tevez Džeko Balotelli Nasri Yaya; Silva Kun Džeko Negredo Jovetic Nasri Yaya; Silva Kun Sané Bernardo Sterling Jesus deBruyne all playing well and combating those packed defences. With the rocks of deJong and Barry behind them or the best #6 in the world over a long stretch of those years in Fernandinho.
Now we have an older de Bruyne underperforming, Sterling underperforming, Jesus underperforming, Mahrez underperforming and Foden/Bernardo/Torres hardly in the team and mostly underperforming when they do play with Gundogan being the only shining light. And even if they were playing well, they aren’t as good as their predecessors. de Bruyne is the same man but he isn’t as good a player as he was three years ago.
It’s our regression that’s the problem, not any change in the oppositions’ tactics.
