Dynamo Kiev - Post Match Thread

The problem is that our performances are starting to look far too much like those of the rags earlier in the season - lots of possession and hardly any worthwhile efforts on goal. We have to sort that out to finish in the top 4, let alone make more progress in the CL.

Personally I think we've played our best football in the CL this season. I agree about our attacking play not being anywhere near as fluid as it should be overall, that's very frustrating. Coupled with the injury to KDB it's led to us looking like a blunt knife at times. However KDB will be back in time for the next leg of the CL and we'll be going further than we've been in the competition. In a wank season where there's little we can be positive about, I can certainly be positive about that progress.

Fairy nuff. I came back from the match to read a shower of negativity a lot of it time stamped just after the match finished. The trouble is the rag fans (including those in the media) read this pages and they revel in the negativity and will do so every day until Sunday. If those rags say that there are more moaners on here than were at the ground last night it is not easy to disagree.
It's the last 18 months as a whole that has made me feel a bit down about City. I've been accused of being a happy clapper a fair few times so I'm not really a negative poster, it's just hard not to be sometimes.

We have played worse and won, i agree there (or we have in patches of a game) but i do think we are in trouble (or would be if Pep wasn't arriving) if we think the level of Norwich and last night is acceptable and professional.

I don't think we're in trouble because as you say Pep's coming in and we are going to see some pretty dramatic changes over the summer. I'm happy to disagree on the performances at Norwich and last night because honestly even if they lacked quality especially in the final third, there was nothing unprofessional about them in my eyes. Quite the opposite.

Honestly it felt like a very professional performance to me. In many respects the injuries could've derailed the whole match but we still managed to keep a clean sheet and get through the tie. Then again I didn't think Norwich was particularly bad either as a performance. IMO we've played far worse this season and won games.

I would say the lack of belief from Kiev helped us last night. They hardly mustered an attack until late in the game. Even then they created two chances because of our absurd policy of holding the defensive line at the 18 yard line.

For me we are lacking a lot of confidence throughout the team and the injury to Kompany won't help that.

I'm interested in the "armchair brigade" comment. Do you just not respect the opinions of any of the "armchair brigade" or is it just the ones who have a different opinion from yours whose opinions you don't respect? Do you even have any idea of who is in the "armchair brigade" or is this just some spurious narrative where fans who are negative are in the "armchair brigade" and those who are positive attend matches?

So you were not at the match?

I don't think there are any real grounds to criticise Pellers or his team selection for last night. His job has probably been made more difficult by the announcement that Pep will be here next season and it's certainly been made a great deal more difficult by the frequent changes forced on the team by injuries, but at 7.45 pm last night we were virtually certainly in the hat for the draw for the last eight. The hard part had been done in Kiev and Kiev hadn't looked like a team with any chance of scoring three at the Etihad! The one and only thing which could have got our nerves on edge was an early goal for them and so when I saw that our back four was the strongest available with Fernandinho and Fernando in front of them and Ya Ya as well I heaved a sigh of heartfelt relief. I could see why Navas was preferred to Sterling because Raheem has done his bit in earning valuable goals and wins so far, but we didn't have to go for broke last night and the lad may be more valuable fresh for the week end. I was even glad Bony was on the bench because I couldn't really see any circumstances in which we'd have to throw Nacho on to chase a goal late on! Then the only other thing that could get us nervy hit, and right where we least wanted it. Vinnie out virtually before the game had started, soon to be followed by his partner. I actually found myself saying a silent prayer - for once, please, can City just do a routine, dull, boring 0-0 so that we can go through without any (more) major events or scares and then all go home! And, thank God, that's what the lads did. I think they call it game management these days.

So, we may well be the only English team in the last eight. Despite what such weighty intellectuals as Carragher & Co have to say, City have been the best of the English teams, certainly in the Pellegrini years. The top English teams are some way behind the best from Spain and Germany and PSG have proved too strong for Chelsea for the last two years. The pundits like to point out that City have never got beyond the last 16 but our groups have always been the toughest possible - the group of death - and Barcelona have lain in wait for the last two seasons. We gave Barca their closest tie last season. The other English teams have not beaten a decent team in the CL since Chelsea won in Munich on penalties. United, Arsenal and Liverpool have always lost comfortably to the first heavyweights they meet, if not before.

When i disagree with them being 'professional' i don't mean to say they were 'unprofessional' i just don't think we played 'within ourselves' last night like some seem to be suggesting. I think we tried to actually win the game every bit as much as we did at Carrow Road, but in the end, we created next to nothing. And that's my worry.

The real lack of confidence IMO is in the final third. I've never seen Silva/Kun collectively struggle to break through limited opposition as often as I have in recent weeks. With Yaya back the performance behind them was fine, even after the injury to Vinny.

Be interesting to see how we look in the derby. By rights our midfield three of Toure, Dinho, Fernando should run that game.
