Warning lights ahead for City as Eden Hazard’s demands soar

Manchester City are prepared to pull the plug on a move for Eden Hazard unless the Lille and Belgium midfielder and his representative lower their exorbitant demands.

Hazard is understood to want about £200,000 a week in wages but the Barclays Premier League champions are thought to be offering about half that figure.

City are adamant that they will not be bullied into placing a relatively inexperienced 21-year-old, who has much to prove, in their top wage bracket alongside established stars such as Yaya Touré and Carlos Tévez and are willing to walk away if Hazard and his agent, John Bico, do not revise their demands.

With Lille valuing Hazard at about £30 million, the proposed move is also complicated by Bico’s reported request for a €6 million fee (about £4.8 million) to facilitate the transfer.

Working on the basis that Hazard would be offered a five-year contract, City are, in effect, being asked to make a commitment of almost £90 million, an investment that they are not prepared to countenance.

Roberto Mancini, the City manager, has identified Younès Belhanda, the Morocco attacking midfielder who was instrumental in helping Montpellier win Ligue 1 in France this season, as an alternative target if the pursuit of Hazard collapses.

Chelsea are also interested in Hazard, but with Fernando Torres their highest earner on about £175,000 a week, the Belgian’s wage demands are likely to prove equally prohibitive for the new European champions.

Manchester United’s interest appears to have cooled, even if their supporters had their hopes momentarily raised yesterday when a spoof version of the club’s official website falsely claimed that Hazard would become their first signing of the summer.

Whereas City accepted that they had to pay higher wages in the past as they tried to lure players who might otherwise have spurned their advances, the club know that, as champions, they are operating from a far greater position of strength and are insistent that they will not be held to ransom.

Hazard marked what is likely to be his last game for Lille by scoring a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Nancy to take his goals tally for the season to 22, but despite his obvious potential, City believe that he remains very much a work in progress and his salary must reflect that.

City could point to how it took Samir Nasri, then, like Hazard now, the brightest young talent in French football, more than 18 months to realise his potential at Arsenal after joining the North London club as a 21-year-old from Marseilles in 2008.

With Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules also preparing to bite, City are equally aware that they must get costs under control after posting losses of £197 million for 2010-11, the biggest in English football history.

Although Mancini is expected to sign several pedigree players this summer, City hope to fund a large portion of any recruits through sales as they prepare to offload a host of players.

Whether one of those is Nigel de Jong remains to be seen, with Inter Milan reported yesterday to be interested in taking the Holland midfielder to San Siro this summer.

De Jong has entered the final 12 months of his contract at City after talks over a new deal were shelved last year owing to the player’s wage demands. Mancini would be happy to keep the Dutchman, but the 27-year-old, having struggled to hold down a regular first-team place this season, may feel that his interests are best served by moving on.

Mancini met Adriano Galliani, the AC Milan vice-president, at the Italian club’s headquarters yesterday, although the City manager was quick to play down interest in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Milan striker who played under him at Inter. “Milan fans can stay calm,” he said.

Nonetheless, Mancini does have a longstanding interest in Thiago Silva, the Milan and Brazil central defender, but the Italian club’s £30 million valuation is restrictive.

Eden Hazard confirms that his agent had talks with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

In the interview after his last game, Eden thanked his team to help him become who he is.

He added added his manager spoke to all 3 clubs, and that the Chelsea offer makes it hard for him to choose.

Very logical for a 21-year old player to doubt, when huge clubs are trying to convince a player to join. Strong doubts because all 3 clubs are different.

Manchester United has many pros, with a tradition and history so big only Real Madrid can keep up with, Millions of fans in fanclubs over the globe, a guarantee to play every year for the Premier League title and Champions League cup. Not to forget Sir Alex Ferguson, who is the only trainer that managed to keep his team in the best 5 teams in Europe for years in a row. And what about the series of ex-players, that are known by any football fan: Cantona, Giggs, Cole, York, Stam, Solkskjaer, Schmeichel, Barthez, Ronaldo... The list is enormous.

Manchester City's tradition is not as strong, but has currently built a very strong team, with players like Tévez, Agüero, Silva, Kompany and the Italian coach Roberto Mancini, a coach with strong records, a strong personality and who used to be as well a very fine technical player.

Chelsea is a combination of both, with stronger tradition than City, has won more prizes won, and remarkable names as Drogba, Čech, Lampard, Terry, etc... that are known to every fan, and have achieved the status of World Class as well.

Both last clubs can offer a much higher salary, but their future depend on the finances of their owners. What if Abramovich (Chelsea) or the Abu Dhabi United Group (Manchester City) to lower the priority of football and decide to stop spending money in the clubs? What if the Financial Fair Play sets in soon, and the clubs are not able to buy any player they want anymore to keep themselves in the top 3? Then it all comes back how well the clubs are led, and what the trainer can do to stay ahead.

The answer lies with Eden Hazard. In our humble, personal opinion, the most important is that the trainer believes in the player, sees the talent that is there. Secondly that the trainer has a proven record of making players better. Thirdly, the stability of the club. Looking at the last 10 years, and seeing where the team ended in the championship says it all.

History has proven all teams can play champion, and be the best for a while, but only few clubs always rise back to the top: Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen, AC Milan, Inter, Real, Barcelona, Marseille, PSG, Anderlecht, Sparta Prague, Ajax, PSV, Feijenoord, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Rosenborg, Olympiakos, AEK Athens, ...

Fuking agent hey if they didn't av agents these players would pocket more of the money! Saying that though you have to have some intelligence to negotiate a move

sounds like every English club is about to pull the plug. Don't think the agent's done much wrong tbh (being a greedy wanker is in the job description). Aim for the stars and after everyone laughs at you, come down a little.
