Edinburgh

tips on what not to do,or say in Embra.

Don't ask what time the 1 o clock gun goes off.
Don't say "that was handy building the Castle so close to the shops"
In an ice cream shop, a poke is actually an ice cream cone.
Don't ask where Inspector Rebus lives.
There are no barms in Embra. ;)
Buckfast is reasonably priced.

Thanks mate. Im arriving on friday about 2pm, want a couple of leisurely tiuristy things to do until 5ish, then a nice place for a drink (maybe a pub/bar that locals go after work?) Then I want a nice (more upmarket) place to eat around 8ish....

Saturday is the main sight seeing day, want to go to the castle, is Arthurs seat worth walking to? (also somewhere nice for breakfast would be good too:)) Any museams, walks etc that you could recommended would be great too.

Somewhere a bit cheaper/quicker to eat and then some nice bars/maybe a club to go to? Looking for relaxed typed bars, not too loud music/dress codes etc- I like in the northern quarter in Manchester if that helps!

Many thanks[/quote]

Hey man,

I'm from the Leith area in Edinburgh. The only bit you really want to see on a weekend in Leith with nice Pubs, Restaraunts & infact the Royal Yacht Brittania is based there is "The Shore" area of Leith. It's really nice there. You can get the 22 bus there (You can get this bus on Princess Street). Apart from that, let's just say, as a tourist you would need longer to explore that area for the nice pubs!

The Hotel you are staying in is VERY nice & Extremely central indeed mate. If I were you I would get setteled then suss out the area, The Royal Mile! There is loads of nice pubs & not too expensive really. The Mitre, & Deacon Broadies are 2 that come to mind. I would then go for a walk up "The Bridges" Head for Chambers Street. At the end of Chambers Street is the National Museum of Scotland & the Greyfriers Bobby.

Next to the Edinburgh playhouse, about 15 mins walk away, you will find the Omni centre. This has a Walkabout, Weatherspoons, Frankie & Bennys and various other chains for a cheap Breakfast or a bevvy.

For your trip I would do the open top Bus (which leaves from Princess Street too!) and maybe an historic walking tour which is right on your doorstep, basically, at the Royal Mile.

Arthurs Seat, The Parlament,The Palace & Queens park is all at the bottom of the Royal Mile. About 10 mins from your hotel & is well worth a couple of hours to walk round. Weather permitting!

Any other specifics let me know mate. Enjoy.

P.S. The Burke & Hare is the best strippers in town! ;-)

Going to Edinburgh on Thursday to celebrate Mrs A'S birthday and planned to see the castle and an open top bus ride.Staying at the Barcelo hotel dont know if its any good but seems its close to everything.
Thanks for the other info.

Went about two weeks ago with the Mrs. We thought it was great, only stayed one night which wasn't nearly enough. The Castle and Holyrood are good. There are different walking tours underground like Mary Kings Close which was excellent.

Can't wait to go back and explore some more.

Cockburn Street deserves a mention just because of it's name and the locals refusal to accept that it can only really be pronounced one way and that is...Cock Burn Street.

Took my Mrs for a weekend away up there a couple of years ago and had a cracking time. You'll find more than enough places to go and things to see.

If you like Mexican food we found a decent place called Mariachi ( I think). Nothing too posh but really good food. You'll struggle to go wrong, there are so many decent bars and restaurant. Only thing I'd suggest is make sure you book a table and don't expect to turn up on speck. We had a nosey round during the afternoon and booked one for later.

There is a Comedy Store as well if you fancy something in between your meal and clubbing it later. Can't beat some of the Scottish comics.

Some great help here. Thanks to every one.
We are staying at the Hilton out at the airport. What is parking like in the city centre or are we best using public transport to get into Edinburgh.
