Energy companies and direct debits

I suppose that's one way of doing it but I've left ours on because I thought it better to keep the brickwork warm rather than letting it cool down, it didn't impact on the bills until recently and the extra is not down to using more, just cost related. However, in anticipation of the further increases in cost I will probably try your method in the near future, there's only the 2 of us here, although I'm not sure it will be easy to change my wife's ways, she leaves doors open, lights on etc all the time, hardly worth clashing over it really, I prefer a quiet life and don't want to turn into my dad, he was fanatical about lights being left on when we were kids, it's a bad childhood memory.
Martin lewis says dont leave heating on all the time , it is cheaper to put it on and off as you need it

Just been listening to Martin Lewis on R4. You get a discount of £200 in October and then pay back £40 a year. He was saying that even if you didn’t get the £200 you still have to pay back the £40 a year. Say you moved out of your parents house or just moved into your own home you will still pay the extra. Yes, I know that if you die you stop paying it back but there will be more people come into the ‘new‘ home bracket than leave in the ‘die’ bracket - that is the nature of our population - so that means the energy companies will get in more £40’s than they paid out in £200’s.

Add to that the companies are making a killing by putting everyone onto the max tariff and someone is going to make a lot of money out of all this and it won’t be us.

Unbelievable what you people pay,2 of us retired home most of the day just had our 3 month gas and Electric bill £152,been with utility warehouse for 8 years never a problem and we don't pay them a penny till we get the bill every 3 months. Also I read my own meters phone them in every quarter and get the correct readings to pay. Also i keep well away from them smart meters.

I cant get into my electric meter to read it and have nobody who can do it for me so i am having to give in and get a smart meter just for that

Me and Mrs H, part time, have the electric fire on when at home and Central Heating a couple of hours a day and paying British Gas dual fuel £165 per month, set to increase to £254, 3 bed semi, what am I doing wrong?
As mentioned above electric heating is mega expensive. The heated floors we have were costing about £8 a day. Admittedly it was 2 bathrooms and downstairs toilet plus kitchen but probably about the same kWh as a 3 bar electric fire.

Cheers, I’ll swap round and just use the gas central heating and keep the fire off, it’s a feature fireplace that is lit up. I take it just using the electric to light up the fireplace without the heating on won’t cost too much?

Oh , maybe not then
As long as the smart meter isn't broken then it won't make your bills higher (or lower most probably). It's main saving is that the energy companies can sack off all of the meter readers.
