I don’t think it’s so much taking orders. He’s a safe guy to have in charge. They know he ain’t gonna start scrapping on the touchline because someone shook his hand the wrong way. Or start calling journalists cunts and storming out of a press conference. Or getting caught cosying up to pretend Sheiks with bags full of money. He seems like a very decent bloke. Polite. Respectful. And never going to cause them any unwelcome problems off the pitch.
& can’t get a club job

Time will tell. These haven’t been preseason friendlies. These have been games played where our players are up to speed and we were still shite tonight.

We lost 4-0 at home to Hungary 3 months ago.

Each time we play, it’s making us look worse. We created nothing tonight.

Italy are shite. Hungary are shite.

We‘re going to struggle next month unless something miraculous happens.

We simply just need a left back to hold the width and can cross. That's what missing in the summer and what missing today.

Justin and Tripper are on wrong footed and they are not Cancelo. Saka does not have defensive ability required by a wing back anymore because he plays as winger at the club for too long. Shaw is terribly out of form.

Grealish has to start or at least start vs good technical team. He is the only one can control the tempo to avoid the whole team run out of stream too quickly.

Predictable shite again, and these performances in the nations league have been long in the making.

Yes it's a poxy friendly tournament, but the Gareth apologists would have been singing a different tune if the team had progressed in it.
If it was so unimportant why not try to experiment with the newer players and a change in tactics?

I more than suspect most of us know why.

After the Euros Gareth should have been given his golden handshake.
Instead he was rewarded for his insipid, uninspiring style of play, with a new contract.

Just a glorified friendly tournament that means nothing, we have done the biz (relatively) in the big tournaments under him.

So walker started did he? Despite missing the last 3 games for us and something like 4 other right backs in the squad. Thanks Gareth.

Playing Maguire is also a huge kick in the teeth for other players, basically confirming that certain players will always get a chance under Southgate regardless of their ability, form or attitude. He'll go to the world cup even if he doesn't play another minute of club football before then.

Fair enough, but you could also apply all of those to Graham Potter as well. If he got handed the England job tomorrow, I don't think he'd start picking fights with journalists or call all the players a useless shower of shits or whatever - I guess that makes him a yes man as well?

Well I’ve not used the term “yes man “ but Potter does seem the “right” type I’d agree. No one had heard of him last the job was up for grabs though.
