England v Germany | Nations League | Monday 26th September, 19:45

I’d agree but we’ve also been pretty fortunate when it comes to the teams we have played in the last two tournaments. Any decent side would’ve snapped your hands off if you offered them the routes we got.

Obviously you can only beat who is in front of you, so I’ll always give credit for that but the reality is that we haven’t won anything and come up short when we finally met teams with good players and a manager with tactical nouse that had the ability to change things and the players to do it. That’s when Southgate’s limitations got exposed because he couldn’t react the same.

Plus it seems our standards have been slipping, and that often happens in the end with lesser managers. You see it in club football all the time with clubs who have a manager who are not up to the required standard, the standards keep lowering and they can’t turn it around. That’s what’s starting to happen here but at international level.

He did the same with Boro, took them uefa cup finalists and a team that had been in the Premier League for 10 years down to the championship, they went into absolute free fall under Southgate after a bit because he just wasn’t good enough to keep the standards needed at that level. And there he had squads that shouldn’t be in relegation battles at the time. He was just clueless.

I hope I’m wrong but I think he is starting to get found out and our 2 good tournaments flattered us in terms of how good we actually are.

Fair and balanced

I’d agree with a lot of that , but overall, ignoring the latest League Nations id say he’s done a very good job

He deserves one last tournament in my opinion then he should go.

‘Should have won something by now’

Come on that is bollox, we’ve already said how tournament football there is no guarantees, like City in the Champions League. There’s no divine right for any club or nation to win a competition

It’s so so difficult and there is world class teams out there that our young lads are up against , it’s a tough gig made more tough by a nation of moaners on the manager and players back constantly

A semi and a final was a tremendous achievement and it was great for the nation - Southgate gave English football a massive lift, we had the youngest squad at the last WC which is forgotten

We have a good chance this WC but no way would I say we ‘should’ be winning the tournament- I’ll just support and hope we do.
Mate, for me its not really about winning as much as performance. Do England have a defined style of play? Do they make best use of the talents they have? Are they flexible in approach and able to adapt to different challenges?
Are they exciting to watch?

For me Southgate is a one trick pony when it comes to setting up his team. Inflexible in thought irrespective of the situation and boy does he have his favourites. He has been good in the past at the PR side and building squad morale which is a big thing. Its hard to argue that a semi and a final are achievements based on what has gone on before but my feeling is that with the squad he had they should have gone one step better.

Just got off Megabus half hour ago left London 7 hours ago. No chargers on bus so missed the thread. Watching England keeps you grounded and you realise how brilliant our club team is. A rake of City games to get to then I'll have my month in Qatar watching us lift it ha ha.

Did you come back through Wales?

A great talent but abysmal tonight. Couldn’t pass a ball 15 yards with Kane wide open.

He isn't a better right winger than Saka, no.

I'd say its his 3rd position when it is Saka's 1st.

Not on form for England unfortunately. I thought by now he’d be standout England’s best player but it’s not happened much so far.

In this 3-4-3 set up and playing on the right side, he is not even the third option unfortunately.

I agree with pretty much all of this and he has underwhelmed massively for England, but not as if Saka or Mount were pulling up trees for England either.

I would like to point out though. The original comment didn't mention formation, or playing players in there favored position or even play players inform for England.

It said play the best players and you look miles better. So that is still saying Mount and Saka are better players than him, I personally would disagree with that.

Plays a player that badly out of form and magically that said out of form player makes 2 big mistakes ............ nobody in there right mind would touch Maguire at the moment but this loon does ...........

Maguire can't go to Qatar can he? Surely not? All discussion about his ability aside, his head has gone. With Greece still calling for his head and a retrial set for next year, and out of favour at his club, I don't see him recovering any form anytime soon.

I think Southgate's stubbornness in playing the same tried and tested players, even when we were relegated from the competition, has meant he now faces a world cup just weeks away and has no time to develop a centre back partnership, but the current set-up is hampered by a clearly poor Maguire.

Coady, Tomori, Ben White, Dan Burn, Stones and Walker. That's our CB options and we can't say for a second that we didn't see this coming. Playing stones and Walker so soon after injuries was stupid, persisting with Maguire is moronic.

For me the most boring and hopeless manager England have ever had.
I can't watch them anymore.
I used to look forward to England games, Southgate has taken away all the pleasure.
