You don’t protect your back 4 when you aren’t available for an out ball mate. You put them under pressure which is what happened for some of the game yesterday. That’s why the no mark media are saying that Stones gave the ball away cheaply. I right.he's protecting the back 4
giving Bellingham more of a free role
has been making vital interceptions and tackles and closes down loads of areas on the pitch

We got round that by playing the ball long. Against Senegal that worked, against another team it may well not. I paused play at one point yesterday and there were 5 in a line at the back including rice And then a gap of 25/30 yards to a front five including Bellingham and Henderson. What is the shape that midfield wants to play? It does my head in.

Not sure exactly what your point is mate in relation to my post ?Fernandino was an absolutely fabulous player but if people only caught snippets of him in the WC they may not rate him. He had his confidence destroyed when he and Brazil were overrun by Germany in the final.

So I have it wrong if I say he defends well, covers well, has excellent athleticism and work rate then ?This is how I feel about fans on Rice
Watching him in the stadium gives you a totally different perspective

For me , Rice is what I’d call an ‘old school’ defensive midfield player, one that’s there to screen the back four, nothing wrong in that and he’s arguably the best England have in that respect, but the position has moved on from what it was on an elite level stage, some people fail to recognise that I think mate.You don’t protect your back 4 when you aren’t available for an out ball mate. Run box to box and carry the team forward
He’s more than just a good defensive midfielder- he’s an all rounder and if he wasn’t allowing Bellingham a free role he’d more attacking for England
