Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

As kid I used to stand in the Kippax alongside Adults listening to them sing, swear, fight as it was then, and do what adults have always done at football matches. Even as a kid I loved it.

These days kids are closeted in their own stand were the atmosphere is sterile, real emotion can and is suppressed, where the match, the atmosphere, and the emotion is replaced by an electronic gadget.

At least they're seeing City win trophies every season. Like many of you we had to wait 34 years.

I agree with the atmosphere at Celtic.
But you have to put it into context, without offending the teams/fans in scotland, Celtic play the likes of St Johnstone, Kilmarnock, Motherwell & St Mirren week in and week out.
So when they come up against Champions league teams and Rangers twice per season, they are creme de le creme of games and of course your going to have the best of atmosphere’s.

What are the displays/atmosphere like when Dundee United rock up? (Honest question)

On the flip side, we play United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and then we play Sevilla/Copenhagen you can see why the difference in atmsophere’s.

Now if Inter/Madrid/Napoli rock up to the Etihad in the quarter/semi finals of the Champions league - then we would match any atmosphere from any game at Celtic Park.
Yes, everything is relative.

So when Celtic play the likes of St Mirren it won't be that good, but it's still good.

Here's a video of them playing St Mirren a few years ago. In a run-of-the-mill game that they won 4-0, which would have otherwise been incredibly flat, was actually bouncing because the ultras thought of a song to wind-up Rangers and kept it going for 15 minutes.

When we are on it, our atmosphere is decent. It's been a lot better this year, too. But our issue is that we have many games where the atmosphere is flat (Brighton is a good example), and on the occasions where the atmosphere is decent, it's not consistent.

Stop clapping about Empty Seats, Edin Dzeko and Vincent Kompany straight from the kick off then. That killed the Brighton game.

There's an element of truth to this, but the lack of atmosphere from every other stand can't be blamed on block 115. We sing consistently, we sing different songs, and the rest of the stadium rarely joins in with anything.

We do need some new songs that suit participation from the whole stadium (and continue past 1 verse). This would be significantly easier with a drum, but our fanbase wouldn't accept it.

I've sat in block 326 a few times this season and can hear the singing from 115 loud and clear - but it's like pulling teeth, trying to get people to join in.

All that has nothing to do with the rest of the stadium who are sitting in complete silence. You can still boo/whistle/shout/cheer/clap, yet no one seems to do so. We could have the best atmosphere in Europe and not sing a single song. There's more to the atmosphere than just that.

99% of our fanbase doesn't have that mentality and unfortunately, we're all just preaching to the choir on this thread because everyone in here, contributing, isn't the problem. It's the disengaged who don't really care. That's why we need to get a smaller section of the stadium going, consistently, to build the appeal and grow naturally.

i largely agree with this.

i think the main problem is the age of our fans. i know the odd poster will pipe up and say I'm x years old and i still sing my heart out and that's great but the fact is that generally speaking younger people have much more energy and will create a much better atmosphere than older people.

we need to get more young people in the ground it's as simple as that

Well said DD. We live in the past too much sometimes. We'll never forget the hero's of the past but to still sing about a forward who really split the fan base with his on/off performances is a bit strange. Hell, we're still struggling for a song for one of the best forwards in the world. It's just an example of how were struggling as a fanbase with getting a good atmosphere. Of course it's possible people can change after all we do have something to cheer about on the pitch.

Absolutely, the bottom line is most can't be arsed backing the team, it's fucking tragic, the best sides we've had in our HISTORY and majority sit there like fucking Helen Keller, this is probably the BEST IT WILL EVER BE !! Wake up and smell the roses...

I’ve sat in 328 since it opened and I tell you, the rest of the ground will join in with Blue Moon, Best Team in the Land, Hey Jude, Come ok City and Hark Now Here. You start the clapping and they won’t. The first few minutes of a game sets the tone due to crowd phycology. If people think “no one is singing around here” they won’t either. Brighton was the worst yet because the first few songs were clap clap clap and that killed it off.

Every song that went round the stadium against Brighton started in level three because they were singing anthems while the south stand went clap clap clap clap clap clap, sometimes oblivious to the rest of the stadium. The first and only time Blue Moon was sung was about 15 minutes in and it spread immediately. The rest of the stadium will often follow a lead but at the moment we haven’t got one.

Singing the blues and scousers cry and Vincent kompany will never ever go beyond two blocks. Ever. Drum or not.

I agree with the poster above. Surely it’s about singing inside the ground. Who really cares if we outsing them at the train station?
I think you’re missing the point. It’s about the atmosphere inside the stadium. No point giving it large and singing your heart out outside the ground when you’re quiet as a mouse inside. How does that help the team ?
I'm absolutely not missing the point and of course it's about the atmosphere in the stadium. I'm hearing plenty blowing smoke up the yellow walls ass so I'm just pointing out that the Dortmund support is your typical Euro robotic type, who don't do "off the cuff" stuff we do. Take their drums and cheerleaders away, they die a thousand deaths, as seen away from the confines of the stadium. They have no comebacks, no banter, just nothing. The main square had plenty of Dortmund fans amongst us who didn't engage with our singing at all. Not a single WWYWYWS. Didn't get a whisper, they just looked on in awe at us. Yes, at our support. Our Mancunian high jinx. They commented on how great OUR support is. And you know what...our support is fucking great.

I'm sick to fucking death of us beating ourselves up. Atmosphere was shit today, fucking early leavers at it again, we sing too fast, we need new songs blah blah fucking blah.

And @citymad..there's every point in singing outside the stadium, in the pubs, at the station. It's what we do, it's a fucking good laugh, especially on Euro aways.

It's not all about the 90 minutes, it's about more than that. It's about the occasion, and a release from the daily grind.

Give me our way all day long. If you don't like it, do something about it.

Completely agree about the robotic nature. I've seen a few German journalists argue that they prefer Premier League crowds because the atmosphere reflects the tension in the match, rather than it being the same "wall of noise" whatever is happening.

If you don't care what's happening, then the drums, the huge noise, the choreography can be exciting, but if you care then the quiet tension can be just as thrilling, the punctuations of frustration, the ripple of people standing as the ball heads towards goal.

I remember being impressed with the away support during the Hamburg match in the Europa League, but the serious passion came from sections of the crowd trying to drag Caicedo back onside through sheer frustrated screams towards the end of the match.

I don't think singing 20 verses of the same song makes a difference either. It's just background noise then. I much prefer the way Palace coordinate their songs to reflect the game, or the way Celtic do. It's more natural. Booing the fuck out of Liverpool when they had the ball and then sporadic roaring when City were on the charge, that audible difference boosts the team more than 20 rounds of the same song.
@Manchester33 @supercity88 and @jrb you should set up a supporters group as you all seem to have the same ideas about what the new North Stand should look like and also how the atmosphere in the ground should be as well #wellsaidlads

The atmosphere will change when the NS is expanded and City take the bold step of creating a proper singing section.(115 isn’t a proper singing section)

A singing section where everyone wants to sing and do sing.
A singing section where people can wave telescopic flags, hold up 2 sticks, without people moaning at them.
A singing section where people can hold up a banner at the front of the stand without people moaning at them.
A singing section where a drop down banner can be dropped down without people complaining below and trying to drag the banner down.

That all sounds fair enough. Just don't bring a bloody drum!

Personally I'd love this. And I hope it's a case of 'build it and they will come and sing'.

If an expanded 2nd tier was built what would you see as the ideal position for such a section? Front and middle of the 2nd tier?

Having one huge tier would also look great for the reveal of huge flags which which could go from top to bottom of it.

City don't need to look any further than United.(unfortunately)

United and the Rags worked together to create a proper singing section close to the players tunnel. United fans had to apply to go into the singing section. It was over subscribed. (I stand corrected on that)

I've watched a couple of United home games and the new singing has made a positive impact on the atmosphere at Old Trafford. It gets the rest of the crowd going during the game. When the crowd can't be bothered singing the singing section will carry on singing regardless. To their credit(spit) the singing section pretty much sing(anti-Ciy ;-) ) songs non-stop for 90 minutes.

Its simple go to the game open your mouths sing shout and cheer. Unless your in the south stand or the corner its not going to happen as no one can let themselves go and feel comfortable to do it without feeling a twat. Thats what has got to change.

Ideally at the front of L2, but that won't happen. Unfortunately I doubt the club would allow it, never mind consider it.

At the back of L2 would be good but would the noise/sound/chants spread down the stand with everyone else joining in constantly? Probably not. The flags and banner displays would be pointless up there.

The remaining option is on L1 behind the goal, which is pretty pointless as it won't get L2 or the rest of the stadium singing. It would just be another 115/SSL1.

I honestly don't know mate.
