Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

The loudest songs are the ones I hear from the North Stand (and I sit / sing level
With the penalty spot at the opposite end of the ground). That’s because those chants have travelled around the ground and involve fans singing in virtually every block.

Lots of people in the South Stand slapping themselves on their backs. Certainly 1894 deserve credit for improvements in the atmosphere. But the South Stand is usually out sung by the away fans.

I’m sure South Stand Level 3 getting behind the team in most of the big games but it’s not very noticeable from where I sit. Maybe if they turned up the volume for more games it would be noticeable.

I hope Saturday is a catalyst for change with more fans realising it’s enjoyable to get behind the lads.
And it’s more enjoyable for the team when we get behind them and stay to the end doing so.

That’s the biggest post-match celebration for a non-title winning game I’ve seen from our players.

We’ve never done a lap of honour after beating United or Liverpool.

A lot of other clubs fans sing about their old players, we’re no different. Our fans still feel a lot of affection for the players that won us our first trophy in 34 years, our first PL title, and subsequent PL titles and trophies.

Bar any mistakes or missing any players out.

Ederson - Chant.
Cancelo - no chant.
Walker - no chant.
Stones - chant.
Dias - chant.
La Porte - chant.
Akanji - no chant.
Ake - no proper chant.
Gomez - no chant.

Foden - no proper chant.
KDB - chant.
ilkay - chant.
Rodri - chant.
Mahrez - chant.
Silva - chant.
Grealish - chant.
Phillips - no chant.

Haaland - chant.
Alvarez - no proper chant.

The rest - no chants.

5 players have no chants.
3 players have no proper chants.
11 players have chants.

We have a full team of player who have chants.

Are there any other fans in the PL who sing about their players more that we do? No there aren't! Maybe United fans come close. No other fans do.

What we need to do is get the chants going for Foden, Ake and Alvarez.

And make up chants for the other 5 players who don't have chants. Especially Cancelo and Walker, our long-term fullbacks.
We need to make up more City chants.

Player chants are good when a player has just scored or done a great piece of play or we’re 4-0 up and we can go through the player back catalogue.

But player chants aren’t the chants to get going when it’s 0-0 early doors straight from the kick off, a draw at any point in the game, or we’re behind. They just fall dead on their arse. Especially when the player being chanted about isn’t even on the pitch or doesn’t even play for us anymore, like does happen at times.

When the team needs a lift we need to sing ‘City’, ‘Man City’, ‘Manchester’ and ‘Manchester City’.

The last new proper City chant we created was over a quarter of a century ago with TBTITLAATW.

Spot on mate.

Spot on mate.
Magical combination of a spot of adversity and (I'd like to think) reasonable ticket prices bringing in up for it fans who might not come week after week. Palace was a similar feeling but Saturday was special.

Hoping now that we can keep up the momentum at Brentford - although the 12.30 kick off doesn't leave much time to lubricate! - as we won't be seeing the lads for a while after that and they deserve a good send-off. Next home game is Everton NYE, so hopefully some good festive vibes there an' all. CTID!

I get whst
I don’t mind the ‘Edin Džeko’ part of that chant.

It’s the beginning of that chant that doesn’t make any sense being sung when we’re trying to win a tight game. Singing about Liverpool players and ‘Scousers’ isn’t going to rouse the rabble and get the team going.

That video of the fans chanting Ci-ty Ci-ty Ci-ty is class! If that was belted out as we build an attack (like it was a few times on Saturday in the second half), it gets everyone going instead of a half hearted ‘Gerrard slipped’ for the fourth time.

It was so much better on Saturday when we ditched all that non-City chanting when we really needed the crowd to get behind the team… and it’s clear as day the team fucking loved it with the way they went round the stadium at the end.

I get what you're saying PC, but tbh I don't think the players are listening to the words in the gane too much...just feeling the noise and support. So I don't care what we sing, as long as we're singing summat (except anything mentioning 'Munich' or 'victims'). And it needs those in the Colin Bell and East to pull their thumbs out!

Having said that, and on a slightly different point, not having a Foden chant is a bit poor.

On the 'lap of honour' - 2 observations

1. Pep seemed to get the importance of starting it early. The players arse about shaking hands, cuddling, waving to their boxes, etc. By the time they've done that most of the fans who hadn't swanned off after 85 mins have gone too. He got the players sorted sharpish which was great.
2. He/the players actually remembered the South Stand. Normally they start just after the away fans and go down the tunnel. Was nice to be remembered!

It was my first game with my youngest lad too. He loved seeing Haaland and being there with big bro...my eldest was singing and bouncing....so it was a very special day all round :-)
