Is it? I was thinking cricket when I looked at that aerial render, and I looked at where you got that from, and that confirmed it. But those are old plans surely knocked on the head by development at OT, so it must be something else which I am not seeing

Apologies.

I have seen the http://www.sheppardrobson.com/projects/ ... tID=100151 one before. It's been posted on here and on SSC years ago.

I'm on about the Collar site, ex-Super Casino site, opposite the East Stand. Both of those renders are vaguely indicative of what's going to go on that site.

In what form and shape that takes is anyone's guess.

I was puzzled for a while thinking you'd left us a clue, and I wasn't getting it. Thanks again for the photos.

From the glass shell like building, which would have been opposite the two small blue buildings on the aerial picture.(picture 3)

You can see the yellow banana shaped building in the 1st and 2nd render pictures. Talk about a strangee concept building/proposal.

This is what they need to do in Stockport with the Merseyway Centre ha ha

This is what the whole site looked like before the 2002 Commonwealth Games brought about the transformation.

Hey, don't laugh but when you look at the schemes in jrb's post above I think this was or is on the cards. And it would bring in a constant stream of visitors which has been one of the stated goals (millions?!?!)

That is scary when you see what it was and what it is about to become!

I've heard that the Gas Holder is going to stay but as apartments. Nothing to do with City but a developer is going to build on the inside keeping the structure as it is

Wouldn't be surprised to see someone take advantage and make it into a hotel if that's true.

Great pics as always jrb.

In the one above are the bridge access ramp and steps in what will be public areas or are they within the confines of the Academy? They look quite close to the Minihad which made me wonder.

Public areas.

Have seen this render before, but not from an aerial view. Another new one.

What's the big, round thing at the top?

A proposed cricket ground that was suggested about 5 years ago, and canned just as long ago.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium Development and Collar Site (cont

The cricket ground was under discussion in 2004 and 2005, before Lancashire CCC decided in May 2006 to stay at Old Trafford - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricke ... fford.html. The now-retired CEO of LCCC, Jim Cumbes said that they were much more likely to have gone to Wigan if they couldn't make the economics of staying at OT stack up. Wigan Council was basically prepared to offer a better financial deal, apparently.

The Super Casino was awarded to Manchester in January 2007 but after the House of Lords voted down the original Bill, Gordon Brown decided in July 2007 not to go back to Parliament with amended proposals, effectively killing the scheme. The renders above were drawn up by firms hoping to win the right to work on the project if it went ahead, but they weren't chosen and the actual artist's impression from the official Manchester Super Casino documentation is below:

EDIT - By the way, from @The_Paris_Angel on Twitter, who's a great follow if you don't already, below is a picture of part of the current stadium site in 1997. IIRC, he did a dissertation on the development of the area and the picture below shows what it was like before work for the Commonwealth Games started a couple of years later:

Looks like a nuclear disaster area doesn't it.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium Development and Collar Site (cont

That tubular steel cladding - just gorgeous

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium Development and Collar Site (cont

Cheers for the pics JRB. You've put some work into documenting the progress.
The academy is already convincingly stunning.

@pretusha - I've seen that paris angel pic on twitter, but only on my phone. Scaled up to desktop it's pretty apparent how dire the area was a few years back.

Yes, it was an absolute wasteland. I know there are disputes over the degree to which it's viable to regenerate an area using sports facilities to drive the development, and before ADUG took City over the plans for other features at Eastlands didn't get off the ground. However, I really don't see what alternative there could possibly have been to attract investment to the area had the Commonwealth Games stadium and other sports facilities not been left there as a legacy.

Incidentally, if anyone wants the background, they'd initially hoped to put a 'high end' retail development on what's now called the collar site but the developer pulled out when the then Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, refused in 2005 to approve central government funding for the Metrolink extension. The Super Casino proposal was a response to that: Manchester was always going to put forward a bid to host the Super Casino, but they decided to use the Eastlands site only after other plans for that land had fallen through. There were also proposals for a large Holiday Inn on site and a building to house MCFC offices next to 'B of the Bang' but these ideas were also eventually abandoned.

All of MCC's Christmases came at once with the arrival of ADUG as the club's owners, though. It's taking plenty of time for everything to get moving, but the development that we'll end up with is far better than anything the Council originally dreamed of.

And finally.

PHEW! :-)

I was quite surprised and taken aback when I saw this.

Anyone?

I'm assuming the services have been rerouted and the piling has been finished, ready for work to start properly on the South Stand.

On the flip side, I did hear plenty of work going on inside the stadium.

The South Stand expansion.

As per, thanks for the kind comments. It's my pleasure. Off for some food and a glass of cold beer. :-)
There won't be any stadium work going on inside, there's a pop music event going on next week or this weekend.
