Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

Re Asda moving to the Great Ancoats site.

Just been having a look at the two sites on Google Earth, and I can't see how they would fit a similar sized Asda there, along with the same retail stores that are staying and being refurbished, as the current Asda site is already larger (including car parks) than the Great Ancoats retail park.

Of course they could be doing something clever and building the car parks beneath the new store, or maybe using the area to the rear of site, to build further on (currently a canal basin with some landscaping (fishing lake ?), that's no longer connected to either the Rochdale or Ashton canals).

was thinking more about FFP rules for Madrid. if they need external funding for their stadium redevelopment, sounds like they cant foot the bill themselves. Does the FFP not include stadium redevelopment costs even though, the finished development improves the club financial situation for the club?

how is that different from operating beyond their means, which is the point of FFP?
There's nothing unusual in borrowing money to fund development though in this case it's not being done domestically. Financial Fair Play allows clubs like MCFC and Real Madrid, or any other club, to deduct any infrastructure spend from their breakeven calculation.

Real Madrid have a lot of connections with the UAE. They had a project to build an island development but it got knocked on the head in the financial crash

Isn't the long term plan to redevelop, along the canal, all the way from the Retail Park to The Etihad?
I think that the council wants to effectively extend the city centre with a mixture of retailing, restaurants and residential property.
I've not walked down the canal from the stadium for years but there certainly used to be a lot of derelict property round there.

I walked it a couple of years ago after a concert, and there is still a lot of derelict (ish) building, certainly some of it could do with an upgrade. The bit I referred to above is behind the Great Ancoats St retail park, and it looks like some work has been done there, as there looks to be decking type paths, and its no longer connected to either canal (I'm sure that could be sorted out though), also I'm not sure how old the google image is, but it doesn't show City square, so its at least 4 years old.

Obviously its an option, but jrb (I think) posted a link higher up, that had some plans and artist impressions, but it didn't look like that was the case, and the food store shown (doesn't mention Asda) looked to small to replace the big one across the road, which was why I had a look.

There is enough room at the great ancoats street site for a significant sized store. If I remember correctly sainsburys produced the original design. My guess is that this and the announcement of the purchase of murrays mill will be the big announcement pre Xmas. The current asda is too big and underused. A smaller site on great ancoats street would work well.

I've only been in a couple of times, so can't comment on its current status, but with lots more housing to come in the area, it would be a mistake to downsize significantly.

Anyhow, how big asda is, is not really city related, just whether or not ADUG have in fact bought the site.

If that was Old Trafford, they could finish as it looks now.

Did that at my local Asda in Great Barr, two huge floors and a car park underneath.
