Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

The trend in supermarkets is to downsize. I don't read their financial reports but I know from the press reports about Sainsbury's and Tescos results / trading statements that they reckon they have too much floor space and are reducing the number of large store openings and concentrating on medium or smaller stores.

Also people need to take into account that the Asda store was originally built to be an American style Walmart store which over there are large enough to accommodate sales of anything from car tyres to tropical fish and everything in between plus the normal food outlet. it didn't stay as Wallmart very long and was quickly rebranded as Asda. There seems to be a lot of unused space in there and the car park is usually less than half full. It is too big for purpose so who knows what could happen with it.

My mate (who played in the same youth team as Ireland) is doing the tour now with his cousin who plays at academy level. He just text me saying it's absolutely incredible and he's never seen anything like it, plus the dorms are like a top hotel. Can't take pictures because security are watching making sure they don't.

The current asda is too big and underused. A smaller site on great ancoats street would work well.
I've only been in a couple of times, so can't comment on its current status, but with lots more housing to come in the area, it would be a mistake to downsize significantly.

Anyhow, how big asda is, is not really city related, just whether or not ADUG have in fact bought the site.

They won't need to downsize, like Squirtyflower posted the car park can be put underneath the store. The still fairly new Tescos next to the Swamp has done this and it is massive.

Re car parking at Gt Ancoats St...

From the PDF posted earlier... <a class="postlink" href="http://www.watermangroup.com/waterman_times/great_ancoats_street" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.watermangroup.com/waterman_t ... ats_street</a>

The approved scheme will redevelop the retail park with a large
format food store acting as a new anchor. The site will also include
restaurants, smaller retail units, a small format cinema and associated
undercroft car parking. Approximately half of the existing non-food retail
warehousing space is to be retained on site and refurbished to a high
standard of appearance.

Massive superstores are now out of fashion and most supermarket chains are focussing on opening smaller local shops to deal with changing patterns of shopping. They are lumbered with the cost of running their large stores and this is depressing their profits.

Maybe ASDA would jump at a chance to get rid of this one?

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

has this ASDA takeover been confirmed by city, i noticed that ASDA are taking on full time staff for the Eastlands store, why would they do that when they are going to move
