There should be an underground, overground wombling free street level (Metrolink) and monorail going from Etihad Campus to the city centre. The transport situation at City is a joke. Still now nearly 16 years after the Commonwealth Games were awarded to the city and over 13 years since the Games went ahead, over 12 years after City moved in and 7+ years since the Sheikh arrived...the quickest way to get back to town after the game is by walking!

Edited just for the fun of it.

I think the finger should be pointed that the guys that run/control the transport system in the city and surrounding area (Gtr Manchester) as a whole, Like people have said, why not build a new station on the line behind the stadium, without building new tracks, the lines already run into Victoria. Also why shut a metrolink station down on matchdays (the one next to ASDA) ? Why not send people going to the east/Ashton to this station, leaving the stadium one for the fans going city centre way !

Because the Etihad stop is geared up to dealing with large numbers, the Velodrome stop is not. It would confuse the punters and some might up waiting at the Velodrome for trams that would not be stopping.

The only thing wrong with the current arrangements is that they do not have two or three double trams scheduled just after the final whistle.

No a bit of simple re modelling at the Velodrome stop(a couple of gates and some new fencing) and a couple signposts ie "Trams to Ashton this way", then the trams to Ashton don't stop at the Campus but stop at the Velodrome stop. I can't see why it would be so hard !

Hows about diverting The Irwell into the Ashton Canal - enlarge it greatly and have Baton Rouge boats taking 200 people at a time into - say - back of Deansgate.
Ok - I'll get me coat.............

How would you put up gates when the stop is wide open. Have you ever been to the stop?

It would cost a fortune to fence off the station and would not be able to keep people out as they could walk along the track. This would not be possible at the Etihad stop which is grade separated.

And it would be zero help to anyone. Stupid idea.

My brother has a narrow boat, it will probably take 20 (they will have to hang on tight mind, 4mph is the speed limit, but there is a risk of drowning) I can see a business opportunity here!!

Whatever they plan to do with the ASDA site should include holding sidings to allow loads of double length trams to be stacked up after the game and clear away the crowds, Look at the Alliance Arena, even Wembly Stadium Station.
Who's paying for them (let alone the sidings!)? You do realise that the metrolink system is stretched almost to capacity at peak times so for night games you would have no chance of "loads" of trams being available just to sit in sidings and there isn't that much slack at weekends either.

As for the wonders of the Allianz Arena, on my last visit there I was queuing for around 45 minutes just to get on the metro platform after the game. Last time I used our metrolink I was back in Piccadilly station in less time than that after the final whistle and I didn't have to leave early either. There's a limit to how fast you can shift 50,000+ bodies after any event, there will always be a significant waiting time unless you set off walking.

A heavy rail station behind the Athletics Arena would be great but upgrading what I believe is currently a freight-only line to carry passenger traffic plus the cost of re-connecting the line with the main line into Piccadilly would be a fairly major infrastructure project not too dissimilar to the Ordsall Chord which is costing close to £100m and has a far better business case than carrying football fans once a fortnight!
