Peel holdings are planning a racecourse near Worsley. Haydock is fucking huge btw.

nowhere near enough space round the etihad for a genuine sized racecourse, although the manchester area could easily support one

perhaps we could get some of these

From recollection some of the additional pitch-side seating is being released in Spring 2015.

Is this right? Any more information available? Could we be back above 47k by the end of the season?

What about bringing some extreme sports to Sports City, make it the national centre for such things? e.g. I was in Singapore last year and they have one of those vertical wind-tunnel things (iFly) and it looked a blast and the queues were very long (which I took to mean it was popular). It also didn't occupy a very big site.

Get a cluster of a few things like that in and you would really drive demand for a hotel, themed foodcourt/street, good quality retail, etc.

Vertical wind tunnel? You mean like aiirkix next to chill factore?

The last race held at Manchester was on the 7 November 1963 at the Castle Irwell course, which was subsequently transformed into a residential complex for students. Ex-jockey Willie Carson was among those who were delighted by the prospect of racing’s return to Manchester.

Good lad - Willy!.

If horse racing ever does come back to Manchester, there'll be a thread on here with fbloke telling us how he predicted it years ago.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

A racecourse was mooted for the snipe many moons ago

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

Peel Holdings were once said to be interested in building a racecourse opposite the old Queens Arms pub (now Amans Indian Restaurant) next to the East Lancs road Boothstown area...but that was probably ten years ago now.

Upon completion, it was also mooted that the Haydock Park site would be sold for residential building.

The racecourse development is supposed to include a golf course I believe to encourage usage on non racing days, this will replicate the old Manchester Racecourse at Castle Irwell which had the original Manchester Golf Club within its track. Quite a lot of opposition to the scheme from the local residents, traffic congestion etc, which is understandable. However this is Peel Holdings were talking about and generally, what Peel Holdings want, Peel Holdings get. You've only got to look at the Trafford Centre, the workd and his wife objected to that development and although it took them 10 years to get approval, they still got it.

Thanks Imber. Great pictures. The terracing in the 3rd tier looks complete now.

That last photo shows the temporary roof supports in place which will hold it up during construction before the new struts are in place

Cant wait to see it complete. Our stadium in recent years has always looked dull from the outside, so the new modern design will light it up a bit.
In recent years you say?! I was never a fan of the cheap metal cladding that Swales surrounded large parts of Maine Road with. Take your point though - would really like the finished stadium to have a ritzy exterior.
