Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

I think it is reasonable to think that in ten years time the stadium will be uniform again and a capacity in the order of 70,000 plus - must admit the new end makes the east and west and north stands look worse.

I'd like to think we might get to 70K in 10 years, but there's a danger than the game as a whole might see attendances drop if ticket prices continue to rise. For the moment, there seams to be plenty of middle class earners willing to take up any slack, but the novelty of football might wear off for some.

I 'think' PL football might be close to peaking in terms of attendances. We'll see.... it's just my gut feeling, and not based on any statistical evidence.

And of course, in order to hit 70K we're going to have to start winning a lot more, which won't necessarily be easy.

Whilst I'm at it can someone explain why they kept the old masts /cables sticking out of the back of the south stand. I thought these were to hold up the existing (old) roof but they're obviously integral to the new design too.
They are still helping to hold up the old roof, and will be removed when they remove the old roof.
No they won't the Cablenet system that they support is essential to the integrity of the existing roof , other stands, to remove them would result in the roof collapsing The additional structs are to support the new roof

Can't say I've studied it that closely, and had assumed the new struts would support the rest of the roof, be interesting to see how much that interferes with the view from the back.

I think having to keep the existing Cablenet structure was the limiting factor in terms of how far back we could build.
If the third tier had been any bigger the views at the back would have been obstructed.

Will the north end be getting the protruding old scaffoldesque type metalwork of the south end....to provide some symmetry, regardless of whether the reach behind the north end is ample?

Here's a photo from 1923. Stadium will be to the left about half way up. The road at the bottom left is Grey Mare Lane becoming Forge Lane as it crosses Ashton New Road. Part of Forge Lane is now buried under the East Stand.

Shame about the connecting of the roof between the south stand and east/colin bell. Looks proper shit but that's life

i think that will get sorted when the sides/stands are done....regardless of that i think the design looks shit ...them protruding posts out onto the new road remind me of a flat roof extension on a period building

Sorry, but I don't agree, I think the corners will give the ground real character when their completed; all modern stadium look the same with the complete bowl effect and lack character and design imagination. Once the North Stand is completed in the next couple of years both ends of the ground will complement each other and will give both ends behind the goals a kop like effect and give the Etihad a unique identity.

Yea no doubt but sorting the sides isn't exactly imminent!

Jacko I know what you mean mate in regards to stadiums all lookingthe same but iI just think in this instance it looks shit. The roof looks like is only really meant to go round neatly, because of the shape of it. It looks a botch job tbh, but hey my season ticket was 380 quid this year so I cant say I particularly give a fuck!

Think everybody has their own option on the grounds design mate, some like the cablenet roof support others don't, think once the stand is finished and scoreboards in place and all the cladding is in place the ends will look more pleasing to the eye. Could be worse could look like that shit hole Meccano Land in Trafford.

The rags have built on old stand after all stand and try to cram so many idiots in the place there is no leg room and nowhere in the ground to even put up a decent scoreboard to,replace the 1970's relic they use

Great pics Imber50.

It's amazing how they've achieved the smooth "sweep" of the roof between the existing stands and the extension to the SS.

For the building engineers amongst us, is this as difficult as it looks? Looks pretty impressive (to my untrained eye) how they've maintained the clean roof lines between the old and new..
I've got an engineering background and yes, that's impressive. It's probably a whole lot easier nowadays with computers and CAD/CAM but it's still pretty cool.

But that just gets the thing designed, to build it remains very impressive. Considering the skill shortages in this country we have got one hell of a construction team on site. There can be no cutting corners, pardon the pun, on this job!
