Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

It is a business decision more than anything. They came in with the aim of winning trophies and creating a global brand. As trophies are won more fans are too and a bigger ground is required. Having a bigger stadium than the rags and a better one of course, for corporate mainly, is part of the business strategy I am sure. Manchester's biggest stadium is a great way to dig another nail in the rag coffin.
Only!

Slightly off topic.
Planning app just gone in for cleared Ancoats Retail Park to be 450+ car park for possibly the next 5 years! No rush then for MCC and Manchester Life(ADUG/City).

They paid 35 million for it mate. No brainier to get some income off it for next few years. Will be a break clause in the parking lease if they progress quicker than thought.

I thought they were supposed to be building a supermarket there at one time. About time they cleared those empty warehouses / shops. A bit of an eye-sore.

Where the small purple, silver, and green circle massing building is?

Any news on the Collar site land, or the proposed MMU Institute of Sport?
That looks mint

Looks a bit tight, especially with the Metrolink tracks running alongside it, but it looks like that parcel of land is big enough. The Arena would probably have to be vertical on all for sides, and boxed shaped, to fit into that parcel of land, rather than something spectacular. Saying that, Architects can pretty much design any type of building to fit into a restricted site. What do you think?

Took a few aerial picture’s of the site and of the MEN Arena from Google images as a rough comparison.

Don’t forget, a concert arena may look very different to the MEN which is more like an indoor stadium built for basketball, ice hockey and boxing as well as concerts.

A concert arena could be in the shape of a theatre rather than have a huge floor space in the centre with four sided stands.

So it may well be very different in area and shape to the MEN.

This is Shanghai’s Culture Plaza Theatre:

Imagine one like the Apollo: standing ground floor area and seated tiers above... but on a huge scale.

Not if you want 20,000 plus you will need a MEN style venue internally, the Albert hall and radio city only hold around 5-6000

Glasgow Hydro holds 13,000 and is in a theatre style, it wasn’t built to host a non-existent basketball or ice hockey team like a lot of arenas in this country. As a concert venue it’s miles ahead of the Manchester Arena - whether it could be worked up to be 20,000+ I don’t know

Yes about the Hydro, anyone in doubt just google image search, it really works as a venue - i was there in Dece, ber to see Paul McCartney and even at the back it seemed close yet holds 13000. Ok we were front row ;) But you enter the floor from the back, and it really did make you feel much closer than when you enter the monster size mcr arena. Mcr Arena is great at what it does, but many an act would play the theatre style but on a large scale.

It’s likely that City will want basketball and ice hockey or whatever at this new arena if we look at the Barca model we’ve taken great influence from.

Wasn't it originally used in the commonwealth games can’t remember what sport it was for but I’m sure it could flip from sports arena to concert hall fairly easily.

We’re more interested in creating or taking over football teams around the world rather than having loads of City sports teams in Manchester. Wasn’t that the main reason Soriano fell out with the Barça president and other board members? As he wanted to have a Barça Football Group worldwide and the others at Barça weren’t interested.

Indeed. Those seated tiers aren’t that big, you could easily extend them and increase the size of the floor space to create a 20000 arena and still be a lot closer to the stage that you would be in the second tier at the back of the other end of the MEN.

Yes.

Should generate some decent income all year round, especially on match days.

A bit like the Piccadilly tower site.

I once had a bit of spare time and worked out that car park generates over a £1million a year in parking fees. :-? Not a bad return if you consider the car park has been there for over 10 years, and the only expenses bar buying the land, which has rocketed in value, especially with HS2 arriving right next it in the future, is the tarmacing of the site, 1 portakabin, and a couple of car park attendants.

I’m guessing there’s no rush to get the Retail Park site developed. ADUG/City have plenty going on with Manchester Life and the proposals around the stadium. And MCC will be desperate to get the Retail Park site right, after finally getting there hands on it, and previously having numerous proposals for the site in the past.

DS. Very nice. https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=160682186#post160682186

PS. Going to the public exhibition next a Week to view the proposals for the current Premier Inn site next to the Mancunian Way. Apparently it’s understood to be of significant scale.

Sorry. Yes. I’m not an Architect. Wish I was. Architects can design any building, especially when they have a blank canvas, a cleared site, and pretty much a limitless budget, if they have that?

I just hope ADUG (if it is them behind the rumoured and proposed arena) and/or MCC don’t bottle it and drop the arena after pressure from the owners of the Manchester Arena and city centre businesses.

Hydro was used for netball, gymnastics and boxing at the Commonwealth Games. A similar style with 15000 non floor seating would be a belter

Let’s face it, if we have a 20,000 seat arena next to the stadium we’re going to try and get some teams playing there. They just might not be City branded in order to attract a larger local audience. It’s absolutely nailed on to happen though.
