Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

We did yeah and had a joint venture with the council for use of the facilities for the public I feel sure we either gifted the facilities to some sporting body or gave them a long term free lease Not sure about Carrington think we still own that as we kicked Bury out as they weren’t maintaining, used by Sale Sharks now I think
Carrington was gifted to Bury FC but they stopped paying the running cost and ran up a big bill that they could not pay

We got £25m for Maine Road
We gave Maine Road to the council and got nothing for it. A figure of 11 mill for land value is lodged in my mind. We also paid for the conversion of the Etihad from an athletics stadium to a football stadium (around 20 mill from memory). Effectively we had put a third into the total cost of the stadium build and have paid rent ever since so a great deal for the council.

What will happen to it going forward ? Surely there are opportunities to make more money doing something else with it

It was valued in the deal at £27 million, which represented its valuation in our accounts at the time. Some argued back then that the figure was excessive to a significant degree.

The Council wanted to cut the capacity to 20,000 or so and lease it to a sports team. Sale RU and Stockport County (seriously) put in bids and Sale were chosen. Unfortunately, their middle class support base didn't fancy a weekly trek from Cheshire to Moss Side so they pulled out. It was sold for housing instead and an FoIA request subsequently revealed it pulled in around £14 million.

That said, even if we take the value of Maine Road as just over half of that originally ascribed to it, the Council has received well over £80 million from City for the stadium as at summer 2024. I've given chapter and verse on this before, so use the search function if you want the proper figures.

A bit of Maine Road nostalgia.

I notice we are back to discussing our deal with the council.
The simple fact is, Manchester City Council wanted the Olympics.
They were fucked off.
For that reason they bid for the Commonwealth games.
When they did they had no idea and no plan.
The first people they asked about using a stadium was the rags.
They said no.
We were second choice.
If we had said no it is likely Manchester would have lost the games. Yes there is talk about a temporary stadium but in all honesty, that was bollocks.
The council needed us and in some respect, we needed them.
The rest is history.
Manchester City Council have done very well out of the deal as we have.
To compare it to this abomination is ludicrous.
United refused a move to Manchester?

Ignore the Council House jibe at the start of the article. Gary James is mentioned in the article.

Labour MP Graham Stringer, who was leader of Manchester City Council at the time, is quoted as saying: “Discussions with United were serious and went to a high level – the highest level.
