The Maine Road and City of Manchester Stadium deals were superb deals for all parties. It was valued in the deal at £27 million, which represented its valuation in our accounts at the time. Some argued back then that the figure was excessive to a significant degree.
The Council wanted to cut the capacity to 20,000 or so and lease it to a sports team. Sale RU and Stockport County (seriously) put in bids and Sale were chosen. Unfortunately, their middle class support base didn't fancy a weekly trek from Cheshire to Moss Side so they pulled out. It was sold for housing instead and an FoIA request subsequently revealed it pulled in around £14 million.
That said, even if we take the value of Maine Road as just over half of that originally ascribed to it, the Council has received well over £80 million from City for the stadium as at summer 2024. I've given chapter and verse on this before, so use the search function if you want the proper figures.
Maine road transformed into a superb housing area and the Etihad and surrounding area becoming a boom part of Manchester, the transformation around there is simply unbelievable and getting better by the day.
